Clendenen Family Vineyards 'Le Bon Climat' Aligoté 2019
Clendenen Family Vineyards, founded by the late Jim Clendenen—an influential figure in California winemaking—is known for producing artisanal, terroir-driven wines. While Jim was best known for his work with Chardonnay and Pinot Noir under the Au Bon Climat label, the ‘Le Bon Climat’ Aligoté showcases his dedication to lesser-known grape varieties. Aligoté, a native of Burgundy, is rarely seen in California, but Clendenen’s careful farming and winemaking have allowed this crisp, vibrant variety to thrive in Santa Barbara County’s cool climate.
The 2019 vintage saw a long, cool growing season, allowing for excellent flavour development while retaining the grape’s hallmark freshness and acidity.
Appearance: Pale straw with a slight green hue, reflecting the wine's freshness and youth.
Aroma: Bright and aromatic, with notes of green apple, lemon zest, and white peach. There are subtle hints of white flowers, wet stone, and a touch of herbaceousness, underscoring the wine’s freshness and minerality.
Taste: Crisp and zesty on the palate, with flavours of citrus—lemon, lime, and grapefruit—alongside green apple and a hint of pear. The acidity is bright and racy, giving the wine a lively, refreshing character. There’s a distinct mineral edge, reflecting the influence of the cool-climate terroir, while a subtle creaminess on the mid-palate adds depth and balance.
Finish: Clean and refreshing, with lingering notes of citrus and minerality. The wine finishes with a crisp acidity that leaves the palate tingling, making it an ideal wine for those who appreciate fresh, vibrant whites.
Food Pairing: This Aligoté is a great match for oysters on the half shell, where its acidity and minerality complement the briny flavours of the oysters. It would also pair beautifully with goat cheese tart or lemon-roasted chicken, as the wine’s citrusy brightness and acidity balance the richness of the dish.
