Coates 'The Gimp' Shiraz 2020
Coates Wines, founded by winemaker Duane Coates, is known for producing high-quality, small-batch wines that combine Old World techniques with New World vibrancy. ‘The Gimp’ Shiraz is a standout in Coates' portfolio, made from carefully selected parcels of Shiraz sourced from some of South Australia's best vineyards, including McLaren Vale and Langhorne Creek. The name 'The Gimp' reflects the wine’s bold and striking character, showcasing the intensity and richness that Shiraz can offer while maintaining a fine balance and complexity.
The 2020 vintage in South Australia produced low yields due to challenging weather conditions, but the fruit that did survive was of exceptional quality, resulting in concentrated, flavour-packed wines.
Appearance: Deep, inky purple with a dark, opaque core, reflecting the wine’s richness and intensity.
Aroma: Bold and aromatic, with intense notes of blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark plum, layered with hints of black pepper, liquorice, and smoky oak. Subtle undertones of chocolate, vanilla, and dried herbs add complexity to the bouquet, creating a rich and enticing nose.
Taste: Full-bodied and powerful, with concentrated flavours of ripe black fruits—blackberry, black cherry, and plum—balanced by savoury notes of black olive, smoked meats, and a touch of earthy spice. The tannins are firm but smooth, providing structure and grip, while a bright acidity keeps the wine fresh and lively. The oak influence is well-integrated, contributing to the wine’s complexity with hints of dark chocolate, vanilla, and sweet spice without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: Long and robust, with lingering notes of dark fruit, pepper, and a subtle smokiness. The finish is balanced and polished, with the fine tannins and acidity ensuring that the wine remains fresh and poised, despite its power.
Food Pairing: This bold Shiraz pairs perfectly with grilled ribeye steak, where the wine’s tannins and dark fruit can stand up to the richness and char of the meat. It would also be an excellent match for barbecued lamb or slow-cooked beef brisket, as the wine’s spice and savoury elements complement the depth and complexity of these dishes
