d'Arenberg The Dead Arm Shiraz 2018
d’Arenberg, located in South Australia’s McLaren Vale, is one of the most iconic producers in the region. Known for their bold and characterful wines, ‘The Dead Arm’ Shiraz is perhaps their most renowned bottling. The wine’s name refers to a vine disease that affects one of the vine’s arms, causing it to die and concentrate all its energy into the surviving arm, resulting in intensely concentrated fruit. The 2018 vintage saw ideal ripening conditions, producing a Shiraz that’s both powerful and complex, showcasing the depth of McLaren Vale’s terroir.
Appearance: Inky, deep purple with a near-black core, indicative of the wine’s concentration and intensity.
Aroma: Bold and aromatic, with ripe blackberry, blackcurrant, and dark plum at the forefront. There are layers of dark chocolate, liquorice, and dried herbs, with savoury notes of black olive and smoked meat. Subtle oak influence adds complexity with hints of vanilla, cedar, and sweet spice, creating an inviting and layered bouquet.
Taste: Full-bodied and rich, the palate is packed with dark fruits like blackberry, plum, and blueberry interwoven with earthy, savoury elements of black pepper, anise, and charred meat. The tannins are firm and structured, providing excellent grip while remaining polished and well-integrated. A bright acidity adds freshness to the wine, balancing its dense fruit and creating a sense of lift. The oak aging is well-integrated, adding spice and texture without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
Finish: Exceptionally long and layered, with lingering notes of black fruit, dark chocolate, and a touch of spice. The tannins, while firm, are smooth and elegant, leaving a savoury, mineral-driven finish that will evolve with further aging.
Food Pairing: This bold Shiraz pairs beautifully with braised beef short ribs or grilled lamb with rosemary and garlic, where the wine’s structure and dark fruit complement the richness and depth of the meat. It would also be a perfect match for barbecue pork ribs or strong cheeses like aged cheddar, where the wine’s intensity and spice harmonise with bold, smoky flavours.
