Simone Scaletta is a small, passionate winemaker in Piedmont, dedicated to crafting expressive, terroir-driven wines with minimal intervention. Nestled in the heart of the Langhe, his vineyards are located on steep hillsides with excellent sun exposure, ensuring optimal ripeness and concentration. Barbera d’Alba Superiore 2019 is a powerful yet elegant expression of this classic Piedmontese variety, showcasing bright acidity, ripe fruit, and refined structure.

The grapes are sourced from sustainably farmed vineyards in Monforte d’Alba, where clay-limestone soils and high-altitude vineyards contribute to the wine’s depth and freshness. After hand-harvesting and careful selection, fermentation takes place in stainless steel to preserve purity of fruit, followed by 12–18 months of ageing in large oak barrels. This gentle oak influence enhances complexity while allowing the Barbera’s natural vibrancy to shine.

Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet reflections, showing both richness and early signs of development. The wine has excellent clarity, with slow-moving legs that suggest balanced alcohol and a smooth, structured body.

Aroma: Expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe cherry, black plum, and wild berries. Hints of violet, liquorice, and sweet spice add complexity, while subtle notes of vanilla, cocoa, and earthy minerality emerge from the oak ageing. A delicate touch of balsamic and dried herbs enhances its depth.

Taste: Bold yet beautifully balanced, with juicy red and black fruit at the forefront. Flavours of dark cherry, raspberry, and blackberry unfold with lively acidity, keeping the wine fresh and vibrant. The mid-palate introduces hints of spice, tobacco, and a touch of dark chocolate, while velvety tannins provide structure without overpowering the fruit.

Finish: Long and refined, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, and a touch of savoury earthiness. The bright acidity ensures freshness, while the polished tannins create a smooth, lingering sensation. As the wine settles, subtle hints of cedar and roasted coffee beans emerge, adding to its complexity.

Food Pairing:
Slow-braised beef ragu with pappardelle, where the wine’s acidity cuts through the richness while complementing the deep flavours of the dish.
Aged Parmigiano-Reggiano, as the wine’s bold fruit and savoury undertones enhance the nutty, salty complexity of the cheese
