La Trava is a boutique winery in Piemonte, known for crafting expressive Nebbiolo wines that capture the essence of the Langhe region. Their Barolo Magnum 2018 is a special large-format bottling, ideal for extended ageing, allowing the wine to develop complexity while maintaining freshness. Sourced from vineyards with limestone-rich soils, this Barolo is aged in large oak barrels to enhance its structure and refinement. The 2018 vintage offers a beautifully balanced expression, with firm yet polished tannins, vibrant acidity, and an elegant depth that will continue to evolve over time.

Appearance: Deep garnet with a glowing brick-orange rim, a classic hallmark of aged Nebbiolo. The wine has a luminous, translucent quality, highlighting its refinement. Swirling reveals slow-moving, well-defined legs, indicating its structure and balanced alcohol.

Aroma: Highly aromatic and layered, with notes of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and dried rose petals. Earthy undertones of truffle, tobacco, and forest floor add depth, while hints of liquorice, cedar, and balsamic provide further complexity. As it opens, delicate touches of orange zest and dried herbs bring freshness to the bouquet.

Taste: Silky yet structured, with a core of bright red fruit, including sour cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate. The lively acidity enhances the vibrancy of the wine, while well-integrated tannins provide depth and longevity. Mid-palate, subtle notes of dried thyme, nutmeg, and dark chocolate emerge, adding layers of intrigue. A touch of minerality from the limestone soils runs through the wine, grounding it with elegance.

Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving, with lingering notes of dried roses, red fruit, and spice. The tannins remain present yet finely textured, ensuring further development with bottle ageing. A final whisper of truffle, balsamic, and cedar leaves a sophisticated and lasting impression.

Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with slow-braised beef cheek, where the wine’s acidity and tannins complement the richness of the dish while enhancing its savoury elements. Also an excellent match with aged Parmigiano Reggiano and honey, as the wine’s complexity balances the nutty sharpness of the cheese while harmonising with the sweetness of the honey.
