Brokenwood is one of Australia’s most respected wineries, with a reputation for crafting iconic wines, particularly from their Hunter Valley vineyards. However, the Wade Block 2 Vineyard Shiraz, from McLaren Vale, is a single-vineyard expression that showcases the diversity and depth of this renowned region. McLaren Vale is famous for producing bold, fruit-driven Shiraz with rich texture and fine tannins, and the 2020 vintage, with its ideal growing conditions, resulted in an exceptional wine that reflects the balance between power and elegance.

Wade Block 2, situated in the Blewitt Springs subregion, is known for its sandy soils and cooler microclimate, which allow the Shiraz grapes to ripen more slowly, building complexity while retaining freshness. The result is a Shiraz that is rich and concentrated but also refined, with impressive structure and a vibrant finish.

Appearance: Deep crimson with a purple rim, indicating both youth and concentration.

Aroma: Aromas of ripe blackberries, dark plums, and black cherry, layered with notes of liquorice, dark chocolate, and a hint of cracked black pepper. There’s an earthy undertone, with subtle notes of dried herbs, eucalyptus, and smoky oak.

Taste: Full-bodied and rich, the palate is lush with flavours of blackberry compote, blackcurrant, and plum, balanced by savoury notes of olive tapenade, spice, and dark chocolate. The tannins are smooth yet firm, providing structure without being overpowering. The wine has a fresh acidity that cuts through the richness, keeping the palate lively and balanced.

Finish: Long and velvety, with lingering dark fruit, pepper, and a touch of vanilla from the oak. The finish is well-rounded, with fine tannins and a subtle minerality.

Pairings: Charred chorizo with rosemary thyme infused honey, ricotta, and pistachio crumb. The smoky, spiced chorizo will match the wine’s peppery and savoury notes, while the richness of the ricotta and honey will complement the fruit and smooth tannins.

400g 9+MB grilled wagyu rump cap with whipped buffalo feta, gremolata, and mojo verde. The wine’s bold fruit and tannins will balance the richness of the wagyu, while its acidity will cut through the fattiness, making it an ideal match for such a decadent cut of meat.
