Castello del Terriccio Tassinaia 2019
Castello del Terriccio, located along Tuscany's northern coast, is known for its elegant, terroir-driven Super Tuscans. Tassinaia 2019 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, a quintessential Super Tuscan that brings together the structure and depth of Bordeaux varietals with the richness and warmth of the Tuscan climate. The estate’s unique coastal location, with its cooling sea breezes and mineral-rich soils, allows these grapes to ripen slowly, maintaining balance and complexity while expressing the Mediterranean terroir.
The 2019 vintage was marked by excellent growing conditions, resulting in a wine with intense fruit concentration, smooth tannins, and vibrant acidity. Tassinaia showcases the estate’s commitment to producing wines that are both age-worthy and approachable in their youth.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with purple highlights, reflecting its richness and youth.
Aroma: Complex and layered, with aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plum, intertwined with notes of cedar, tobacco, and graphite. As the wine opens, it reveals hints of Mediterranean herbs, cocoa, and a touch of vanilla from the oak aging, adding both depth and elegance to the bouquet.
Taste: Full-bodied and structured, the palate is rich with flavours of dark fruit—blackcurrant, blackberry, and black cherry—complemented by savoury notes of leather, dried herbs, and a touch of spice. The tannins are fine-grained yet firm, giving the wine excellent structure, while the bright acidity keeps the fruit in balance and provides freshness. Subtle oak influences of vanilla and dark chocolate add complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Finish: Long and refined, with lingering notes of dark berries, tobacco, and a hint of graphite. The wine’s firm tannins and balanced acidity ensure a clean, elegant finish that will evolve beautifully with further aging.
Pairings: 400g 9+MB grilled wagyu rump cap with whipped buffalo feta, gremolata, and mojo verde. The wine’s bold tannins and dark fruit flavours will stand up to the richness of the wagyu, while its acidity will cut through the fat, creating a harmonious balance.
Slow-cooked porchetta wrapped in jamon with cavolo nero, parsley, garlic, onion jam, and red wine jus. The savoury, herb-infused flavours of the porchetta will pair beautifully with the wine’s earthy, herbal undertones, while its structure complements the richness of the dish.
Castello del Terriccio Tassinaia 2019 is a powerful yet refined Super Tuscan, offering a perfect balance of ripe fruit, structured tannins, and savoury complexity. It can be enjoyed now with bold, flavourful dishes, but it also has the potential to age gracefully for the next decade, developing even more complexity with time.
