Los Cerros de San Juan, Cuna de Piedra Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020
Los Cerros de San Juan is Uruguay’s oldest winery, founded in 1854, and is known for producing high-quality, terroir-driven wines. Located in the Colonia region, the estate benefits from a maritime climate influenced by the Río de la Plata, which helps maintain freshness and balance in its wines. Their Cuna de Piedra Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2020 is a bold yet elegant expression of the grape, combining ripe fruit, structured tannins, and refined oak ageing. Carefully crafted to highlight Uruguay’s unique terroir, this Cabernet Sauvignon balances richness with finesse, making it an excellent example of the country’s growing reputation for fine wines.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with garnet reflections, showing its youthful intensity and structure. The wine has excellent clarity, with slow-moving, well-defined legs that suggest a full-bodied style with balanced alcohol.
Aroma: Rich and complex, with aromas of ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry, and blackberry. Hints of cedar, vanilla, and sweet spice emerge from oak ageing, adding warmth and depth. Earthy undertones of tobacco, graphite, and dark chocolate enhance the aromatic profile, giving it a refined and layered expression.
Taste: Bold and well-structured, with a core of dark fruit flavours, including blackcurrant, plum, and cassis. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing grip and balance. Mid-palate, subtle notes of black pepper, liquorice, and espresso add complexity, while a touch of minerality from the Colonia region’s limestone-rich soils enhances the wine’s elegance. The oak influence is well-integrated, contributing to a smooth, refined texture.
Finish: Long and lingering, with dark fruit, savoury spice, and a touch of toasted oak. The tannins remain present but smooth, ensuring further ageing potential. A final flourish of cocoa, dried herbs, and blackcurrant leaves a sophisticated and lasting impression.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with grilled ribeye steak, where the wine’s tannins and acidity cut through the richness of the meat while complementing its smoky char. Also an excellent match with aged Manchego cheese, as the wine’s dark fruit and spice enhance the cheese’s nutty depth.
