Dicey is a family-run winery in Central Otago, New Zealand, founded by brothers Matt and James Dicey. Dedicated to crafting wines that express the unique Bannockburn terroir, Dicey focuses on minimal intervention winemaking and sustainable viticulture. Their 2024 Chenin Blanc is a vibrant and expressive wine, showcasing the cool-climate precision and rich fruit character that define the region. The growing season provided warm days and cool nights, allowing the grapes to develop complexity while preserving their bright acidity.

The vineyards are situated in Bannockburn, one of the warmest and driest subregions of Central Otago, where schist soils provide excellent drainage and contribute to the wine’s mineral backbone. Fermentation in stainless steel enhances freshness, while a short period on lees adds texture and depth, resulting in a wine that is both crisp and layered.

Appearance: Pale straw yellow with a delicate green hue, highlighting its freshness and youthful energy. The wine is luminous and clear, shimmering under the light with a brilliant sheen. When swirled, it moves elegantly in the glass, leaving slow, fine tears that suggest a balanced texture and a well-integrated acidity. Its clarity and brightness reflect the precision of its cool-climate origins.

Aroma: Expressive and aromatic, with ripe apricot, honeydew melon, and citrus zest leading the way. Floral notes of white blossoms and a hint of wet stone add elegance, while a subtle touch of beeswax hints at the wine’s depth and ageing potential.

Taste: Vibrant and well-structured, with flavours of ripe pear, nectarine, and Meyer lemon. The bright acidity gives precision and lift, while a gentle mineral character provides complexity. A slight honeyed richness on the mid-palate balances the freshness, creating a wine that is both refreshing and textured.

Finish: Long, clean, and mineral-driven. The lingering stone fruit and citrus notes fade gradually, leaving a crisp salinity and a touch of white pepper. The bright acidity ensures a refreshing and structured finish, making this a versatile and age-worthy white wine.

Food Pairing: Grilled scallops with lemon butter, where the wine’s acidity and minerality enhance the delicate sweetness of the shellfish. Soft cheeses like Brie or Camembert, balancing the wine’s freshness with the creaminess of the cheese. Roast chicken with herbs and garlic, complementing the wine’s citrus and stone fruit notes while highlighting its subtle richness.
