Firriato Branciforti, Feudi Branciforti Nero d’Avola 2021
The Branciforti family, with deep roots in Sicilian history, has long been associated with the island's viticulture. Their collaboration with Firriato led to the creation of the Feudi Branciforti dei Bordonaro line, celebrating Sicily's rich heritage and diverse terroirs. The 2021 Nero d'Avola is sourced from the Gelso Grande estate, situated in the Trapani countryside between Mount Erice and the Egadi islands. These vineyards, located on gentle hills at altitudes between 300 and 400 metres above sea level, benefit from medium-textured soils with a clayey tendency, providing an ideal environment for Nero d'Avola cultivation.
Appearance: Intense ruby red with purple reflections, indicating richness and concentration. The wine’s depth and brilliance suggest freshness and vitality, while the deep hues hint at its structured body.
Aroma: Aromas of ripe red fruits, particularly plum and blackberries, intertwined with notes of Mediterranean scrub and delicate balsamic hints. Subtle nuances of liquorice, tobacco, and a touch of vanilla add layers of complexity.
Taste: Soft and enveloping on the palate, revealing a compact and full-bodied structure. Flavours of dark plums and blackberries are complemented by a touch of spice, earthiness, and cocoa. A fine balance of acidity and well-integrated tannins gives the wine freshness and elegance.
Finish: The finish is long and elegant, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, and a touch of oak. The velvety tannins leave a refined and well-rounded aftertaste, with hints of dried herbs and black pepper emerging in the final moments.
Food Pairing: This Nero d'Avola pairs excellently with roasted or grilled meats, bringing out their smoky depth. It also complements flavoured medium-aged cheeses, such as pecorino, and classic Italian dishes like lasagna with ragout or veal filet with wild mushrooms, enhancing the umami richness of these meals.
