Henschke Henry's Seven Shiraz Blend 2013
The Henschke Henry’s Seven Shiraz Blend 2013 is a tribute to Henry Evans, who planted the first vineyard of the region in Keyneton in the 1850s. This wine is a vibrant blend of Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvèdre, and Viognier, showcasing the Rhône-style blending that the Henschke family has mastered in the Eden Valley. The 2013 vintage benefited from warm, dry conditions, producing a wine with great concentration, ripe fruit, and balance, while retaining the elegance characteristic of Henschke wines.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with purple highlights, showing its youthful vibrancy and intensity.
Aroma: The nose is aromatic and expressive, with ripe red and dark fruits such as blackberry, raspberry, and plum, layered with notes of dried herbs, black pepper, and subtle spice. There are floral hints from the Viognier, as well as earthy undertones of leather and tobacco, adding depth and complexity.
Taste: On the palate, this Shiraz blend is medium to full-bodied, with flavours of ripe red berries, dark plum, and blackberry, balanced by savoury notes of black pepper, anise, and dried herbs. The Grenache adds a juicy, fruit-forward character, while Mourvèdre brings structure and earthiness. Fine tannins and a vibrant acidity give the wine elegance and lift, while the touch of Viognier adds aromatic complexity and a smooth texture.
Finish: The finish is long and smooth, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, and a hint of earthy minerality, showcasing the wine’s balance and potential for further aging.
Food pairing: This versatile blend pairs beautifully with grilled or barbecued meats, such as lamb chops, sausages, or beef skewers. It also complements rich stews, such as lamb shanks or beef brisket, as well as hearty vegetable dishes like ratatouille or mushroom-based dishes. Aged hard cheeses like cheddar or Manchego also work well, bringing out the wine’s complexity.
