Il Borro, an esteemed estate in Tuscany, has a rich history dating back to the early 1600s. In 1993, Ferruccio Ferragamo acquired the property, dedicating himself to revitalising its winemaking traditions. The 2018 'Il Borro' marks the 20th anniversary of the estate's flagship wine, reflecting a commitment to quality and innovation. This vintage is crafted from biodynamically and organically grown grapes, comprising 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 15% Syrah. The wine undergoes meticulous vinification, including fermentation in stainless steel tanks, malolactic fermentation in new Allier oak barrels, and an 18-month ageing period in barriques, followed by an additional 8 months in the bottle before release.

Appearance: The 2018 'Il Borro' presents a deep ruby red colour with purple highlights, indicating its concentration and potential for ageing. The core is intense and nearly opaque, suggesting a full-bodied structure, while the rim shows subtle garnet hues that hint at early development. The wine’s clarity and brilliance reflect careful vinification practices. When swirled, slow, steady legs form on the glass, indicative of its richness and well-integrated alcohol.

Aroma: On the nose, this wine offers an intense bouquet of blackberries, ripe plums, and dark cherries, complemented by complex undertones of tobacco, cedarwood, and earthy spices. Notes of liquorice, graphite, and a touch of balsamic add depth, while hints of cocoa and vanilla emerge from its extended barrel ageing. The aromatic profile is layered and evolves beautifully with aeration, revealing its refined structure.

Taste: The palate is full-bodied and rich, with ultra-fine tannins that spread smoothly across the tongue. Flavours of dark berries, cassis, and blackcurrant are prominent, followed by nuances of cola, espresso, and toasted oak. The wine displays remarkable balance, with a lively acidity that lifts the fruit while ensuring elegance and freshness. Silky yet firm tannins provide structure, and a slight mineral character adds complexity to the mid-palate.

Finish: The finish is long, velvety, and lingering, with persistent notes of dark chocolate, sweet tobacco, and crushed black pepper. As the flavours fade, a gentle warmth from the oak influence remains, enhancing the wine’s depth. The well-honed tannins leave a dry yet polished sensation, indicating excellent potential for further ageing. The refined balance between fruit, acidity, and structure ensures a memorable and sophisticated aftertaste.

Food Pairing: 'Il Borro' 2018 pairs exceptionally well with meat-based dishes of the Tuscan tradition, such as wild boar stew, braised beef cheeks, and the classic Florentine T-bone steak. It also complements aged cheeses, where the wine’s robust structure and complex flavours enhance the richness of the cheese. Its depth and spiced notes make it a fantastic match for dishes featuring truffle or slow-cooked lamb. Serving at a temperature of 16–18°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and depth.

This vintage exemplifies Il Borro’s dedication to producing outstanding wines that showcase the best of Tuscany’s terroir, blending tradition with innovation to create a wine of exceptional character and longevity.
