Fattoria Castelvecchio, situated in San Casciano Val di Pesa within the Chianti Colli Fiorentini zone of Tuscany, has a rich tradition of producing exceptional wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. 'Il Brecciolino' is a distinguished Super Tuscan blend, artfully combining Merlot, Petit Verdot, and Sangiovese grapes. The name 'Il Brecciolino' translates to 'small gravel,' symbolising the pebbles that cover the country roads and vineyards, emphasising the wine's deep connection to its territory. Notably, this was the first wine crafted under the direction of winemaker Filippo Rocchi.

The 2016 vintage is composed of 70% Merlot, 20% Petit Verdot, and 10% Sangiovese. The grapes are meticulously hand-harvested from select vineyards: 'Piano' for Sangiovese, 'Cipresso' for Merlot, and 'Gaben' for Petit Verdot. Following a 48-hour cold maceration, fermentation occurs over 18 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 24 months in oak barrels, followed by an additional 12 months of bottle refinement before release.

Appearance: In the glass, 'Il Brecciolino' 2016 presents an intense, deep ruby red colour with garnet hues developing towards the rim, indicating both vibrancy and maturity. The wine’s depth and opacity suggest a concentration of fruit and structure, while the rim subtly fades to a lighter ruby shade, showcasing its evolving character. When swirled, thick and slow-moving legs coat the glass, hinting at its richness, full body, and well-balanced alcohol presence. The overall clarity and brilliance reflect the precision and careful vinification that define this wine.

Aroma:The nose is greeted with a complex bouquet of ripe dark fruits, including cherry and plum, complemented by floral notes of dried red rose. Subtle hints of sweet spices such as vanilla and liquorice intertwine with tertiary aromas of tobacco and cocoa, alongside nuances of aromatic herbs, creating a harmonious and inviting aromatic profile. As the wine breathes, deeper layers of graphite, cedar, and a delicate balsamic note emerge, adding further depth and intrigue.

Taste: On the palate, this full-bodied wine offers a harmonious blend of its components. The rich flavours of mature cherry and plum are balanced by the spiciness of liquorice and vanilla. Soft and velvety tannins provide a round and pleasant mouthfeel, while a balanced acidity imparts freshness, leading to a long and persistent finish. The presence of Petit Verdot adds structure and a touch of black pepper, while the Sangiovese brings a refined acidity that enhances its elegance. The seamless integration of fruit, spice, and savoury elements results in a complex and expressive wine.

Finish: The finish is enduring and elegant, with the initial fruit and spice notes gradually giving way to lingering impressions of tobacco, cocoa, and a hint of dried Mediterranean herbs. A delicate minerality subtly lingers on the palate, reinforcing the wine’s sense of place. The finely structured tannins add depth and refinement, ensuring a graceful, lingering aftertaste that speaks to the wine’s exceptional balance and aging potential.

Food Pairing: 'Il Brecciolino' pairs exceptionally well with robust dishes such as roasted red meats, game, and hearty pasta dishes rich in flavour. It also complements aged cheeses and can be an intriguing match with high-percentage dark chocolate. Its layered complexity makes it a superb pairing for slow-cooked lamb shank, grilled ribeye steak, or truffle-infused risotto. Serving at a temperature of 16°–18°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic complexity and structure.

This wine exemplifies Fattoria Castelvecchio's dedication to producing high-quality, terroir-driven wines that honour the rich viticultural heritage of Tuscany. It is a bold yet refined expression of a modern Super Tuscan, balancing power with elegance and aging potential.
