Tenute del Cabreo, under the stewardship of the Folonari family, has been a pioneering force in Tuscany’s winemaking landscape since the early 1980s. In 1983, they introduced 'La Pietra', Tuscany’s first white Super Tuscan, crafted exclusively from Chardonnay grapes. This innovative approach involved fermenting and aging the wine in French oak barrels, a technique traditionally reserved for red wines in the region. The Chardonnay grapes for 'La Pietra' are cultivated in the high-altitude vineyards of Tenuta Casa di Sala in Panzano in Chianti, situated at approximately 450 metres above sea level. The elevation and unique terroir contribute to the wine’s distinctive character and remarkable aging potential.

Appearance: The 2018 'La Pietra' Chardonnay presents a shimmering golden hue, reflecting its maturity and the influence of oak aging. A soft glow of amber emerges at the edges, indicating the wine’s evolving complexity. The wine’s clarity and brilliance are indicative of meticulous vinification practices. When swirled, slow-moving legs form along the glass, hinting at its richness and well-balanced alcohol content.

Aroma: On the nose, this Chardonnay offers an enigmatic and exotic bouquet. Aromas of ripe yellow fruits such as pineapple, banana, and peach are complemented by refined notes of vanilla and butter, derived from its time in French oak barrels. Subtle hints of white spring flowers and cedar add complexity and depth to the aromatic profile. A gentle smokiness and a whisper of almond emerge with aeration, further enhancing its character.

Taste: The palate is greeted with a rich and textured wine that beautifully balances opulence and freshness. Flavours of candied lemon and tangerine zest are prominent, interwoven with nuances of hazelnut and a slight salinity that adds intrigue. A touch of honeyed richness emerges mid-palate, softened by the wine’s creamy mouthfeel. The bright acidity ensures vibrancy, while the oak influence imparts depth and structure, keeping the flavours well-defined.

Finish: The finish is long, creamy, and persistent, carrying lingering notes of baked apple, toasted brioche, and a delicate touch of warm spice. The well-integrated oak influence imparts a velvety texture that coats the palate, leaving traces of vanilla and caramelised nuts. A final wave of citrus zest and minerality provides freshness, ensuring the wine remains balanced and elegant. The interplay of richness and acidity suggests excellent potential for further bottle aging.

Food Pairing: 'La Pietra' Chardonnay pairs exceptionally well with a variety of dishes. Its richness complements roast chicken and pork, while its acidity and complexity enhance seafood dishes such as scampi and other shellfish, especially those prepared with butter-based sauces. Additionally, aged cheeses find a harmonious companion in this wine. Serving at a temperature of 10–12°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structure.

This wine exemplifies Tenute del Cabreo’s dedication to innovation and quality, offering a profound expression of Tuscany’s potential for producing world-class Chardonnay.
