Los Cerros de San Juan, Maderos Gran Reserve Cabernet Franc 2018
Los Cerros de San Juan, established in 1854, is Uruguay's oldest winery, renowned for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Colonia region. Their Maderos Gran Reserva Cabernet Franc 2018 is a bold yet elegant expression of the grape, combining rich fruit, spice, and refined tannins. The maritime influence of the Río de la Plata helps maintain freshness and balance, while careful oak ageing enhances complexity and depth.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with garnet hues, showing both concentration and maturity. The wine has a nearly opaque core, with a slightly lighter rim that hints at gentle evolution. Swirling reveals slow, well-defined legs, suggesting a full-bodied structure and well-integrated alcohol. Its vibrant colour and clarity reflect both richness and finesse.
Aroma: Aromas of ripe blackcurrant, dark cherry, and plum are complemented by notes of cedar, tobacco, and a hint of vanilla from oak ageing. Subtle herbal tones of bell pepper and graphite add further complexity.
Taste: Full-bodied and well-structured, with layers of black fruit, dark chocolate, and liquorice. The tannins are firm yet velvety, providing excellent grip and balance. Hints of black pepper, earthy undertones, and a touch of smoke add depth, while bright acidity keeps the palate fresh.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering notes of blackberry, spice, and a touch of oak. The tannins remain present yet refined, ensuring excellent ageing potential. A final hint of cocoa and dried herbs leaves a memorable impression.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops with rosemary, where the wine’s tannins balance the richness of the meat while complementing its savoury character. Also an excellent match with roasted red pepper and goat’s cheese tart, as the wine’s herbal notes enhance the dish’s smoky and creamy elements.
