Louis Guntrum, Pinot Noir 2021
Louis Guntrum is one of Germany’s most historic wineries, with roots dating back to 1648. Located in the Rheinhessen region, the estate is known for its refined, terroir-driven wines that balance elegance and structure. Under the guidance of Louis Konstantin Guntrum, the winery continues to honour traditional winemaking while embracing modern techniques. This Pinot Noir 2021 is a vibrant and expressive example of German Spätburgunder, showcasing bright fruit, fresh acidity, and a silky texture.
The vineyards are situated along the Rhine River, benefiting from a cool climate that allows for slow ripening, preserving acidity and delicate aromatics. The loess and limestone-rich soils add finesse and minerality, while careful vineyard management ensures purity of fruit. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel to highlight the wine’s fresh, red-fruited character, followed by ageing in large oak barrels to add subtle structure and spice without overpowering its elegance.
Appearance: Light ruby with brilliant clarity and a shimmering, almost translucent edge. The wine’s delicate colour reflects its cool-climate origins, with a youthful vibrancy that suggests freshness and precision. A slight watery rim hints at its elegant, lower-extraction style.
Aroma: Bright and inviting, with fresh red cherry, wild strawberry, and crushed raspberry taking the lead. Subtle earthy notes of dried leaves and forest floor emerge, followed by a hint of spice, soft vanilla, and a touch of rose petal. A faint minerality adds an extra layer of finesse, making the nose both vibrant and complex.
Taste: Light to medium-bodied, with silky tannins and a beautifully fresh acidity that carries the red fruit flavours. Juicy cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate dominate, with a hint of black tea and a delicate savoury note adding depth. The oak influence is subtle, providing gentle spice and a touch of cedar, while the fine minerality brings a refined, structured finish.
Finish: Elegant and lingering, with refreshing acidity and a delicate mix of tart red berries, spice, and a whisper of dried herbs. The balance of fruit and structure makes it both approachable now and capable of short-term ageing.
Food Pairing: Roast duck with cherry glaze enhances the wine’s bright acidity and red fruit character, creating a harmonious balance of flavours. Grilled portobello mushrooms with thyme and garlic highlight its earthy undertones, complementing the wine’s silky texture and subtle spice.
