Louis Guntrum is a historic winery in Germany’s Rheinhessen region, with a winemaking tradition dating back to 1648. The estate has built a reputation for producing elegant, terroir-driven wines, with a strong focus on Riesling and Pinot Noir. Today, under the guidance of Louis Konstantin Guntrum, the winery continues to craft wines that reflect both tradition and modern precision. The Pinot Noir Reserve 2017 is a testament to the estate’s commitment to quality, showcasing the finesse and depth that German Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) can achieve.

The vineyards, situated along the Rhine River, benefit from a moderate climate that allows for slow, even ripening. The combination of loess, clay, and limestone soils enhances the wine’s structure and minerality. Aged in French oak barrels, this Pinot Noir gains complexity while retaining its elegant fruit character and silky texture.

Appearance: Pale ruby with garnet reflections, showing delicate transparency and a slight brick hue at the rim, indicating some maturity. The wine’s light-bodied nature is evident in its graceful movement in the glass, with fine, slow-forming legs.

Aroma: Elegant and refined, with bright red cherry, wild strawberry, and cranberry at the forefront. Subtle earthy notes of forest floor, dried leaves, and mushroom emerge, adding depth. Hints of clove, cinnamon, and a touch of vanilla from oak ageing enhance the aromatic complexity.

Taste: Silky and balanced, offering vibrant red fruit flavours of raspberry, cherry, and redcurrant. The mid-palate introduces delicate spice, with a whisper of cedar, dried herbs, and a fine minerality that brings freshness. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, creating a polished and harmonious structure.

Finish: Long and graceful, with lingering red berry notes, a touch of spice, and a savoury, slightly smoky undertone. The wine’s acidity keeps it fresh, while the subtle oak influence provides a gentle warmth and elegance.

Food Pairing: Duck breast with a cherry and balsamic glaze enhances the wine’s red fruit and spice, creating a beautifully balanced pairing. Wild mushroom risotto highlights the wine’s earthy tones, with the creamy texture complementing its silky tannins.
