Oak Valley Estate, established in 1898 in the cool-climate region of Elgin, South Africa, has a rich history of agricultural excellence. Originally founded by Sir Antonie Viljoen, the estate has evolved over the decades, with a strong focus on viticulture since the late 20th century. The Tabula Rasa series represents Oak Valley's commitment to producing exceptional single-clone Pinot Noirs that express the unique terroir of their vineyards. The vineyards are situated high along the Groenlandberg Mountain Range, benefiting from one of the coolest wine-growing climates in South Africa. The 2020 growing season commenced slightly earlier, following a winter with below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures. A significant spring rainfall event brought 135mm of rain and some hail over a single weekend, leading to reduced crop sizes due to millerandage. The summer was mild with cool nights, ensuring gradual ripening and retention of high natural acidity. The grapes were hand-picked from selected vines within the South Ridge High-Density block between 28 January and 5 February, marking one of the earliest harvests to date. The careful vineyard management and unique climatic conditions have imparted a distinct character to this wine.
