Oak Valley Estate, established in 1898 in the cool-climate region of Elgin, South Africa, has a rich history of agricultural excellence. Originally founded by Sir Antonie Viljoen, the estate has evolved over the decades, with a strong focus on viticulture since the late 20th century. The Tabula Rasa series represents Oak Valley's commitment to producing exceptional single-clone Pinot Noirs that express the unique terroir of their vineyards. The 2020 vintage of the Tabula Rasa PN667 is a testament to this dedication, showcasing the distinctive characteristics of the PN667 clone.

The vineyards are situated high along the Groenlandberg Mountain Range, benefiting from one of the coolest wine-growing climates in South Africa. The 2020 growing season commenced slightly earlier, following a winter with below-average rainfall and above-average temperatures. A significant spring rainfall event brought 135mm of rain and some hail over a single weekend, leading to reduced crop sizes due to millerandage. The summer was mild with cool nights, ensuring gradual ripening and retention of high natural acidity. The grapes were hand-picked from selected vines within the South Ridge High-Density block between 28 January and 5 February, marking one of the earliest harvests to date. The careful vineyard management and unique climatic conditions have imparted a distinct character to this wine.

Appearance: The wine exhibits a deep ruby hue with a vibrant, translucent rim, indicative of its youth and purity. The clarity and brilliance reflect meticulous winemaking practices, while the slow-forming legs on the glass suggest a well-structured body.

Aroma: The nose is rich with darker fruits, including blueberry, blackberry, and tart black cherry. Attractive herbal and vegetal notes of spearmint and beetroot emerge, complemented by a hint of cinnamon spice, creating a complex and inviting bouquet.

Taste: On the palate, the wine is fresh and linear yet possesses a velvety texture. Flavours of cranberry and nectarine are prominent, leading to a harmonious balance between fruit and subtle spice. The well-integrated tannins provide structure without overpowering the delicate fruit profile.

Finish: The finish is long and grippy, with lingering notes of red fruit and a subtle earthiness. A gentle minerality adds depth, while a touch of oak influence imparts a refined complexity, leaving a lasting impression.

Food Pairing: This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. It complements roasted duck breast with a cherry glaze, where the wine's acidity balances the richness of the meat. For a vegetarian option, consider a wild mushroom risotto, as the earthy flavours harmonize with the wine's herbal notes.

The Tabula Rasa PN667 Pinot Noir 2020 exemplifies Oak Valley's dedication to producing wines that authentically express their terroir, offering a sophisticated and memorable tasting experience.
