Alion 2018 Magnum
Bodegas Alión, located in the renowned Ribera del Duero region of Spain, is an illustrious winery that was established by the Alvarez family, the owners of the legendary Vega Sicilia. Alión was founded in 1986 with the vision of producing a modern expression of the Ribera del Duero, showcasing the potential of Tempranillo with a more contemporary style. While Vega Sicilia is known for its traditional approach, Alión wines reflect a fresher, fruit-forward profile. Alión is particularly famous for its single-varietal Tempranillo wines, which have received acclaim for their depth and elegance.
The Alión 2018 Magnum is crafted from 100% Tinto Fino (the local name for Tempranillo) grown in a mix of the estate’s own vineyards and select plots in the area. The terroir of Ribera del Duero is characterized by its high altitude, with vineyards situated at about 800 meters above sea level, contributing to the grapes' slow ripening and resulting in wines with great complexity and balance. The region’s continental climate, with hot summers and cold winters, is moderated by the Duero River, allowing for the development of rich, concentrated fruit flavours. The wine is aged in new French oak barrels for 12 to 14 months, imparting structure and subtle nuances of spice and vanilla, before being further refined in bottle.
Appearance: The Alión 2018 Magnum boasts a deep, intense ruby colour with a garnet rim, indicating its youth and potential for aging. Its viscosity is evident as it swirls in the glass, showcasing its full-bodied nature.
Aroma: On the nose, this wine offers an expressive bouquet of ripe blackberries, plums, and dark cherries, intertwined with notes of vanilla, cedar, and a hint of dark chocolate. As it opens up, subtle aromas of tobacco, liquorice, and toasted oak emerge, adding layers of complexity.
Taste: The palate of the Alión 2018 is full and rich, with a luscious core of black fruit flavours complemented by well-integrated oak and spice. The tannins are firm yet velvety, providing structure and balance to the wine's vibrant acidity. Nuances of graphite and mineral notes add depth to the mid-palate, making it a compelling and dynamic wine.
Finish: This wine has a long, persistent finish, characterized by lingering flavours of ripe fruit, cocoa, and a touch of espresso. The tannins soften gracefully, leaving a lasting impression of elegance and power.
Pairing: The Alión 2018 Magnum would pair beautifully with 400g 9+mb grilled wagyu rump cap with whipped buffalo feta, gremolata, mojo verde, and smashed pistachio. The wine’s rich fruit and tannic structure will stand up to the intense flavours and marbling of the wagyu, while its acidity will cut through the richness, complementing the dish’s savoury elements. Another excellent pairing would be slow-cooked porchetta wrapped in jamon with cavolo nero, parsley, garlic, onion jam, and red wine jus; the wine's depth and complexity will enhance the dish's earthy, umami-rich flavours, creating a harmonious and indulgent dining experience.
