Romano Winery, Gaia Nero d’Avola 2023
Romano Winery, established in 1890 in Partinico, Sicily, is renowned for its dedication to producing wines that embody the rich heritage and terroir of the region. The Gaia Nero d’Avola 2023 is a testament to this commitment, crafted exclusively from the indigenous Nero d'Avola grape variety.
The vineyards are situated at an altitude of 250 metres above sea level, with an east-west exposure. The cultivation method employed is espalier, which, combined with the region’s calcareous and clayey soils, provides an ideal environment for the Nero d'Avola vines. The 2023 vintage benefited from favourable weather conditions, resulting in grapes of exceptional quality.
Appearance: The wine exhibits a vivid ruby-red colour with reflections tending towards violet, highlighting its youthful vibrancy and clarity. When swirled in the glass, it reveals a medium-high density, with slow-moving legs that hint at its well-balanced structure and smooth texture. The deep core suggests concentration, while the slightly translucent rim provides a glimpse of its freshness and bright acidity. The wine's rich hue and polished brilliance make it visually inviting and indicative of its fruit-driven, well-structured profile.
Aroma: On the nose, it offers an intense bouquet of black cherry, black plum, and strawberry, intertwined with subtle notes of tobacco, dried herbs, and a hint of salinity, adding complexity to the aromatic profile.
Taste: The palate is intensely fruity and spicy, with enveloping notes of cherry, raspberry, blackcurrant, and dried plum. These flavours harmoniously blend with spicy tones reminiscent of liquorice, cloves, and rhubarb, complemented by nuances of cocoa, chocolate, cinnamon, and eucalyptus. The wine’s firm acidity and full body are balanced by soft, well-integrated tannins, contributing to a smooth and elegant mouthfeel.
Finish: The finish is long and pleasantly flavoured, with the rich fruit and spice notes gradually giving way to a lingering aftertaste of subtle herbs and a touch of minerality. The balanced structure ensures a satisfying and memorable conclusion. Hints of dark chocolate and black pepper linger in the background, enhancing the wine’s complexity and depth.
Food Pairing: The rich fruitiness and balanced acidity of this Nero d’Avola make it a versatile companion for a wide range of dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with appetisers like salami, main courses such as roasted red and white meats, gourmet pizzas, premium meat burgers, tempura vegetables, and legume-based dishes. It also complements cheeses like truffle-infused Gorgonzola and Cheddar. Serving at a temperature of 18°-20°C enhances its flavours and structure.
The Gaia Nero d’Avola 2023 exemplifies Romano Winery’s dedication to producing wines that capture the true essence of Sicily’s indigenous grape varieties and terroir, offering a distinctive and enjoyable tasting experience.
