Aia Vecchia, Lagone 2019 Magnum (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc)
Aia Vecchia, a family-owned winery established in 1996, is situated between Bolgheri and Castagneto Carducci along the Tyrrhenian coast of Tuscany. The estate is renowned for producing wines that reflect the unique terroir of the region. 'Lagone' is one of their flagship wines, first produced in 1998, and is crafted to embody the elegance and complexity characteristic of Tuscan blends. The 2019 vintage is a blend of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, sourced from vineyards located at an elevation of 100 meters above sea level. The soil composition of sand, clay, and limestone contributes to the wine's complexity. Vinification involves a 20-day maceration and fermentation period in stainless steel tanks, followed by 12 months of aging in various types of oak barrels and an additional three months of bottle aging.
Appearance: In the glass, the 'Lagone' 2019 exhibits a deep ruby red hue with purple reflections, indicating its richness and potential for aging. The wine's clarity and brilliance reflect meticulous vinification practices. Swirling the glass reveals slow-forming legs, suggesting a full-bodied structure and significant alcohol content.
Aroma: The nose is greeted with a delicate bouquet of cherries and wild herbs, complemented by subtle hints of cocoa and bitter orange. As the wine opens, additional layers emerge, including notes of vanilla and a touch of raw beef, adding depth and complexity to the aromatic profile. A slight hint of Mediterranean herbs further enhances its freshness.
Taste: On the palate, the 'Lagone' 2019 offers a harmonious blend of ripe dark fruits, such as plum and black cherry, complemented by spicy notes of black pepper and a hint of chocolate. The wine is dry, structured, and elegant, with well-structured tannins that provide a firm yet velvety mouthfeel. Balanced acidity ensures freshness, while the integration of oak imparts a smooth, rounded character. The complexity of flavours reflects the meticulous blending of grape varieties and the influence of the Tuscan terroir.
Finish: The finish is lengthy and smooth, with lingering notes of dark fruit, tobacco, and a subtle minerality. A slight minty nuance and a juicy, mouth-watering sensation leave a lasting impression, inviting another sip. The well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity suggest excellent aging potential, allowing the wine to develop further complexity over time.
Food Pairing: The 'Lagone' 2019 in magnum format is an excellent companion for a variety of dishes. It pairs exceptionally well with both red and white meats, such as grilled lamb chops or roasted chicken, and rich pasta dishes like pappardelle with wild boar ragù. Aged cheeses, such as Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano-Reggiano, also complement the wine's robust character. Serving at a temperature of 16–18°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and depth of flavour.
This wine exemplifies Aia Vecchia's dedication to producing high-quality, terroir-driven wines that honour the rich viticultural traditions of the Tuscany region. The 2019 'Lagone' in magnum offers a refined and memorable tasting experience, suitable for special occasions and extended cellaring.
