Celebrating 130 Anniversary edition

The Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva 2008 is an exceptional expression of the Aglianico grape from the renowned Taurasi appellation in Campania, Southern Italy. Mastroberardino, one of Italy’s most historic and respected producers, is known for reviving and preserving ancient grape varieties and winemaking traditions. The Taurasi Riserva, often referred to as the "Barolo of the South," is known for its complexity, depth, and age-worthiness. The 2008 vintage, with over a decade of aging, showcases the bold character and elegance that make this wine a standout.

Appearance: Deep garnet red with brick-red edges, indicating both maturity and the potential for further aging.

Aroma: The nose is highly complex and evolved, with rich aromas of dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, interwoven with savoury notes of leather, tobacco, and dark chocolate. There are also hints of dried herbs, anise, and clove, alongside earthy nuances of forest floor and a slight smoky undertone, adding to the wine’s depth and sophistication.

Taste: On the palate, this Aglianico is full-bodied and structured, with firm, yet well-integrated tannins that give the wine its signature grip. The flavours of ripe black fruit, such as blackberry and plum, are complemented by savoury notes of tobacco, leather, and dark spices. The wine also exhibits a distinct minerality and a slight balsamic note, reflecting the volcanic soils of the region. The aging in oak has added layers of complexity, with subtle notes of vanilla, dark chocolate, and a touch of cedar. The wine is both powerful and elegant, with a balancing freshness that adds lift to the rich flavours.

Finish: The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of dark fruit, spice, and earthy minerality, leaving a refined and harmonious aftertaste.

Food pairing: This Taurasi Riserva pairs beautifully with robust dishes such as slow-cooked lamb, braised beef, or game meats like venison. It also complements hearty pasta dishes with rich sauces, mushroom-based risottos, and aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino. Ideal for special occasions or fine dining, this wine’s complexity and structure make it a perfect match for bold flavours.
