This box includes six 750ml bottles.
The Mastroberardino Taurasi Riserva 2004 is a magnificent example of aged Aglianico from the esteemed Taurasi appellation in Campania, Italy. Produced by the legendary Mastroberardino family, known for their dedication to preserving ancient Campanian grape varieties, this Taurasi Riserva is often hailed as the "Barolo of the South" due to its structure, complexity, and age-worthy nature. The 2004 vintage, now approaching two decades of age, is fully matured, offering deep complexity and elegance.
Appearance: Deep garnet red with brick-orange hues on the rim, showcasing its maturity and long aging potential.
Aroma: The nose is intense and evolved, offering complex aromas of dried black cherries, plum compote, and blackberry, interwoven with savoury notes of leather, tobacco, and cedar. Earthy undertones of forest floor, truffle, and a touch of balsamic add further depth, while subtle spice notes of clove, cinnamon, and cocoa give the wine a layered and rich bouquet.
Taste: On the palate, this Aglianico is full-bodied and velvety, with finely integrated tannins that have softened over time. Flavours of dried black fruit, such as blackcurrant and prune, are complemented by savoury notes of dark chocolate, leather, and tobacco. There’s a distinct earthy minerality, along with a touch of dried herbs and spices like anise and black pepper, contributing to the wine's remarkable complexity. The oak aging has imparted additional nuances of vanilla and cedar, while the vibrant acidity keeps the wine fresh despite its age.
Finish: The finish is exceptionally long and refined, with lingering notes of dried fruit, spice, and a subtle earthy minerality, reflecting the wine's perfect balance between power and elegance.
Food pairing: This mature Taurasi Riserva is ideally paired with rich and hearty dishes such as braised lamb, wild boar, or venison. It also complements robust pasta dishes with ragu, truffle-based dishes, or aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano or Pecorino. The wine’s depth and complexity make it a perfect choice for special occasions and contemplative drinking, offering a true taste of Campanian heritage.
