Sassicaia 2013 3L
Sassicaia is one of Italy’s most iconic wines, produced by the Tenuta San Guido estate in Bolgheri, Tuscany. First crafted in the 1960s by Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta, Sassicaia was inspired by the great Bordeaux wines and quickly became one of the world's most acclaimed "Super Tuscans." The 2013 vintage reflects the estate’s deep commitment to quality and tradition, with the wine consistently receiving praise from critics and collectors alike. Sassicaia is primarily made from Cabernet Sauvignon, blended with a small amount of Cabernet Franc, and showcases the exceptional terroir of Bolgheri.
The vineyards of Tenuta San Guido are located near the Tyrrhenian Sea, benefiting from a unique microclimate that combines cooling sea breezes with warm Tuscan sun, allowing for optimal grape ripening. The stony soils of Bolgheri are reminiscent of those found in Graves, Bordeaux, giving the wine its characteristic minerality and elegance. Sassicaia is aged in French oak barrels for around 24 months, followed by additional time in bottle, ensuring the wine develops its complex layers of flavour and silky texture.
Appearance: The wine shows a deep garnet red, with subtle brick hues beginning to emerge at the rim, indicative of its evolving maturity. The colour is intense, signalling concentration and depth.
Aroma: The nose opens with rich aromas of dark fruits, such as blackcurrants, black cherries, and plums, along with a pronounced note of cedar, tobacco, and leather. As the wine breathes, more complex layers of graphite, earthy truffle, and a hint of sweet spice like cloves and vanilla unfold, giving the bouquet exceptional depth.
Taste: On the palate, Sassicaia 2013 is full-bodied with finely woven tannins and a remarkable structure. Flavours of ripe blackberries, cassis, and dark cherries dominate, with a subtle undercurrent of herbaceous notes like sage and thyme. The oak ageing introduces nuances of dark chocolate, espresso, and smoky vanilla, which blend seamlessly with the wine’s natural fruit and minerality. There is a beautiful balance between freshness and richness, with a firm backbone of acidity keeping everything in harmony.
Finish: The finish is long, elegant, and complex, with lingering notes of ripe fruit, tobacco, and a touch of graphite minerality. The tannins are firm yet polished, leaving a refined, velvety mouthfeel.
Food Pairing: Sassicaia 2013 is best paired with rich, flavourful dishes that can stand up to its complexity. A perfect match would be a slow-braised beef rib in red wine reduction, where the deep flavours of the dish complement the wine’s robust fruit and tannic structure. Another excellent pairing would be with a classic bistecca alla Fiorentina (Florentine steak), as the wine’s acidity and tannins will cut through the richness of the beef, while its earthy, herbaceous notes enhance the steak’s smoky, chargrilled flavours.
