Tasi, Amarone della Valpolicella 2017
Tasi is a relatively young but passionate producer in Valpolicella, focusing on sustainable and organic winemaking. Their philosophy revolves around minimal intervention and respect for the land, allowing the terroir to express itself fully in their wines. The 2017 vintage was marked by a warm growing season, which resulted in concentrated and intensely flavoured grapes, perfect for Amarone’s signature depth and richness.
The vineyards are located in the rolling hills of Valpolicella, where limestone and clay soils provide both structure and freshness. The appassimento process, where grapes are dried for several months before fermentation, enhances the wine’s complexity and luxurious texture. Aged in oak barrels, Tasi’s Amarone balances power with elegance, showcasing both ripe fruit and savoury earthiness.
Appearance: Deep ruby with garnet highlights, showing impressive intensity and density. The viscosity is evident as the wine coats the glass, hinting at its richness and high alcohol content. The rim has subtle hints of brick-red, indicating early signs of ageing.
Aroma: Powerful and layered, offering notes of dried cherries, blackberries, and ripe plums. Hints of dark chocolate, cinnamon, and vanilla emerge from the oak ageing, while undertones of tobacco, dried herbs, and balsamic provide extra depth. As the wine opens, earthy and truffle-like notes become more pronounced.
Taste: Full-bodied and velvety, with intense flavours of black cherries, figs, and dark cocoa. The richness of the fruit is balanced by well-integrated acidity, keeping the wine vibrant. Secondary notes of espresso, liquorice, and sweet spice add complexity, while fine-grained tannins give it a structured yet smooth mouthfeel.
Finish: Exceptionally long and warming, with lingering notes of dark berries, bitter chocolate, and a hint of orange zest. The tannins remain polished, providing grip without overwhelming the palate. A subtle smokiness and mineral character leave a lasting impression.
Food Pairing: Perfect with slow-cooked venison stew, where the wine’s bold structure complements the deep, gamey flavours. Aged Pecorino or Parmigiano Reggiano also makes for an excellent match, as the umami-rich cheese enhances the Amarone’s fruit and spice notes. For a vegetarian option, try it with a wild mushroom and black truffle pasta
