Simone Scaletta, Barolo 'Bussia’ 2017
Simone Scaletta is a passionate winemaker based in Monforte d’Alba, Piemonte, crafting wines that express the region’s unique terroir with minimal intervention. His Barolo 'Bussia' 2017 comes from one of Barolo’s most prestigious crus, Bussia, known for producing powerful yet elegant wines with remarkable ageing potential. The Nebbiolo grapes are grown on steep limestone-rich slopes, benefiting from excellent drainage and exposure, resulting in a wine of structure, depth, and finesse. Aged in large oak barrels, this Barolo balances firm tannins with complex aromatics, showcasing the true essence of the Langhe.
Appearance: Deep garnet with brick-orange hues at the rim, reflecting both the wine’s age and Nebbiolo’s naturally pale colour. The wine is highly translucent, with a radiant clarity that highlights its elegance. Swirling reveals slow, pronounced legs, hinting at its richness and well-integrated alcohol.
Aroma: Intense and multi-layered, with classic notes of dried roses, red cherries, and wild strawberries. Earthy undertones of truffle, forest floor, and dried herbs add depth, while hints of tobacco, leather, and spice emerge from careful oak ageing. As it opens, delicate notes of tar and anise provide further complexity.
Taste: Bold yet refined, with a core of red berries, tart cherries, and pomegranate balanced by firm tannins and bright acidity. Mid-palate reveals layers of liquorice, dried orange peel, and savoury spice, while subtle oak influences of cedar and vanilla enhance the structure without overpowering the fruit. The tannins are present but finely textured, giving the wine excellent ageing potential.
Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving, with lingering notes of dried fruit, rose petals, and a touch of savoury minerality. The tannins leave a refined grip, while the acidity provides freshness, ensuring a graceful and balanced finish. Hints of truffle and leather continue to develop, adding to the wine’s complexity as it lingers on the palate.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with braised veal shank with saffron polenta, where the wine’s tannins and acidity complement the richness of the dish. Also an excellent match with aged Parmigiano Reggiano, as the wine’s savoury depth enhances the nutty, umami flavours of the cheese.
