Simone Scaletta is a dedicated winemaker in Monforte d’Alba, Piemonte, producing wines that reflect the purity and power of the region’s terroir. His Barolo DOCG ‘Bricco San Pietro Riserva’ 2015 comes from a prime vineyard site known for its high elevation and well-drained limestone-rich soils. The extended ageing process, both in large oak barrels and in bottle, allows this wine to develop remarkable depth, structure, and elegance. Crafted from carefully selected Nebbiolo grapes, this Riserva is a bold yet refined expression of Barolo, built for long-term ageing but already displaying impressive complexity and balance.

Appearance: Deep garnet with a luminous brick-orange rim, a classic sign of aged Nebbiolo. The wine is beautifully translucent, showing its elegance and maturity. Swirling reveals slow, pronounced legs, hinting at its well-structured body and concentration. The clarity and depth of colour suggest a wine that has evolved gracefully over time.

Aroma: Intensely aromatic and layered, with notes of dried roses, black cherries, and ripe redcurrants. Earthy undertones of truffle, leather, and forest floor add a savoury complexity. Hints of anise, tobacco, and cedar emerge from its extended barrel ageing, while delicate traces of dried herbs and orange peel bring a lifted freshness. As the wine opens, subtle nuances of tar and balsamic develop, adding to its intrigue.

Taste: Powerful yet beautifully balanced, with a core of red and dark berry fruit intertwined with vibrant acidity. The tannins are firm yet silky, providing structure without overwhelming the palate. Notes of black cherry, cranberry, and dried fig lead to complex layers of liquorice, nutmeg, and espresso. A gentle minerality runs through the mid-palate, enhancing the wine’s depth and sense of place. The oak influence is subtle, allowing the Nebbiolo’s natural character to shine.

Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving, with lingering notes of dried roses, dark fruit, and spice. The tannins remain present but refined, offering a pleasant grip that suggests excellent ageing potential. A final touch of leather, tobacco, and earthy truffle adds to the wine’s sophistication, making each sip more compelling than the last.

Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with braised wild boar with rosemary and juniper, as the wine’s structure and acidity balance the richness of the dish while complementing its herbal notes. Also an excellent match with black truffle risotto, where the wine’s earthiness enhances the deep, umami flavours of the truffle.
