Aurelio Settimo is a small, family-run winery in La Morra, one of Barolo’s most esteemed villages, known for crafting traditional, terroir-driven wines. Their Barolo DOCG Rocche dell’Annunziata 2019 comes from one of the region’s most celebrated crus, where the combination of limestone-rich soils and ideal south-facing slopes produces wines of exceptional elegance, structure, and ageing potential. Aged in large Slavonian oak barrels, this Barolo is a perfect balance of power and finesse, showcasing the depth and complexity that make Rocche dell’Annunziata one of La Morra’s finest vineyard sites.

Appearance: Deep garnet with a striking brick-orange rim, characteristic of Nebbiolo’s ageing process. The wine is beautifully translucent, with slow-moving, well-defined legs that indicate a full-bodied structure and balanced alcohol. The clarity and brilliance suggest both refinement and longevity.

Aroma: Highly expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and dried rose petals. Earthy undertones of truffle, forest floor, and tobacco add depth, while hints of liquorice, cedar, and balsamic provide further intrigue. As the wine opens, delicate notes of dried orange peel, anise, and white pepper emerge, enhancing its aromatic finesse.

Taste: Silky yet powerful, with a core of bright red fruit, including sour cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, lifted by Nebbiolo’s signature acidity. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing structure without overwhelming the palate. Mid-palate flavours of liquorice, nutmeg, and dried herbs add layers of complexity, while a subtle mineral streak from the vineyard’s calcareous soils gives precision and elegance. The oak influence is well-integrated, allowing the purity of the fruit to shine.

Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving, with lingering notes of dried roses, red fruit, and a touch of savoury spice. The tannins remain structured yet smooth, ensuring further development in the bottle. A final flourish of truffle, balsamic, and cedar leaves a sophisticated and lasting impression.

Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with braised veal shank with saffron polenta, where the wine’s structure and acidity enhance the dish’s richness while complementing its delicate flavours. Also an excellent match with aged Pecorino Toscano, as the wine’s tannins balance the cheese’s sharpness while harmonising with its nutty complexity.
