Cavalier Bartolomeo, Barolo San Lorenzo 2014
Cavalier Bartolomeo is a historic winery in Piemonte, known for crafting classic, terroir-driven Barolo wines. Their Barolo San Lorenzo 2014 comes from the prestigious San Lorenzo vineyard, a site known for producing refined and expressive Nebbiolo. The 2014 vintage was a cooler year, resulting in wines with remarkable elegance, vibrant acidity, and finely structured tannins. Aged in large oak barrels, this Barolo balances power with finesse, offering complexity, depth, and excellent ageing potential.
Appearance: Deep garnet with a delicate brick-orange hue at the rim, characteristic of Nebbiolo’s graceful ageing process. The wine is translucent yet richly coloured, with slow-moving, well-defined legs that suggest a structured body and balanced alcohol.
Aroma: Highly expressive and layered, with aromas of red cherries, wild strawberries, and dried rose petals. Earthy notes of truffle, forest floor, and leather add depth, while hints of liquorice, balsamic, and cedar emerge from its extended oak ageing. As the wine opens, delicate nuances of dried orange peel, anise, and white pepper enhance its complexity.
Taste: Elegant and refined, with a core of vibrant red fruit, including sour cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, lifted by Nebbiolo’s signature acidity. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing structure without overwhelming the palate. Mid-palate flavours of liquorice, nutmeg, and dried herbs develop, complemented by a subtle mineral streak that reflects the vineyard’s limestone-rich soils.
Finish: Long and evolving, with lingering notes of dried roses, red fruit, and a touch of savoury spice. The tannins remain structured yet smooth, ensuring further development in the bottle. A final flourish of truffle, balsamic, and cedar lingers gracefully, leaving a sophisticated and memorable impression.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with braised duck with porcini mushrooms, where the wine’s structure and acidity enhance the dish’s richness while complementing its earthy depth. Also an excellent match with aged Parmigiano Reggiano, as the wine’s tannins balance the cheese’s nutty intensity while harmonising with its umami complexity.
