Cavalier Bartolomeo, Barolo San Lorenzo 2015
Cavalier Bartolomeo is a historic winery in Piemonte, renowned for producing traditional, terroir-driven Barolo wines. Their Barolo San Lorenzo 2015 comes from the prestigious San Lorenzo vineyard, where limestone-rich soils and optimal sun exposure contribute to the wine’s balance of power and finesse. The 2015 vintage was warm and generous, resulting in a Barolo with excellent concentration, ripe tannins, and impressive ageing potential. Aged in large Slavonian oak barrels, this wine embodies the structure and elegance that define great Barolo.
Appearance: Deep garnet with a radiant brick-orange hue at the rim, characteristic of Nebbiolo’s evolution. The wine is beautifully translucent yet rich in colour, with slow-moving, well-defined legs that indicate a full-bodied structure and balanced alcohol.
Aroma: Intense and multi-layered, with aromas of ripe red cherries, wild strawberries, and dried rose petals. Earthy undertones of truffle, forest floor, and tobacco add complexity, while hints of liquorice, cedar, and balsamic provide further depth. As the wine opens, delicate notes of dried orange peel, anise, and warm spices emerge, enhancing its aromatic finesse.
Taste: Bold yet refined, with a core of vibrant red fruit, including sour cherry, cranberry, and pomegranate, lifted by Nebbiolo’s natural acidity. The tannins are firm yet polished, providing depth and longevity. Mid-palate, subtle layers of liquorice, nutmeg, and dried herbs unfold, complemented by a refined minerality from the vineyard’s calcareous soils. The oak influence is well-integrated, adding structure without overshadowing the purity of the fruit.
Finish: Exceptionally long and evolving, with lingering notes of dried roses, red fruit, and a touch of savoury spice. The tannins remain structured yet smooth, ensuring further development in the bottle. A final flourish of truffle, balsamic, and cedar lingers gracefully, leaving a sophisticated and lasting impression.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with braised veal shank with saffron polenta, where the wine’s structure and acidity enhance the dish’s richness while complementing its delicate flavours. Also an excellent match with aged Pecorino Toscano, as the wine’s tannins balance the cheese’s sharpness while harmonising with its nutty complexity
