Binomio is a collaborative venture between esteemed winemakers Stefano Inama of Inama Azienda Agricola and Sabatino Di Properzio of Fattoria La Valentina. Established in 2000, they acquired a 4.2-hectare high-altitude vineyard in San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore, situated at approximately 300-350 metres above sea level on the hills of Mount Majella. This vineyard is notable for its unique "Africa-Binomio" clone of Montepulciano, characterised by grape clusters resembling the African continent. The soil composition is predominantly clayey, providing an ideal terroir for cultivating high-quality Montepulciano grapes.

Appearance: The wine exhibits a deep, almost opaque ruby-red hue with striking purple highlights, suggesting both intensity and concentration. As it coats the glass, slow-moving, thick legs form, hinting at its richness and full-bodied nature. The core remains dense and impenetrable, with only a slight transparency at the rim, indicating its youth and aging potential. The vibrant colour saturation reflects the robust character of this Montepulciano.

Aroma: The nose is powerful and expressive, unfolding in layers of dark fruit and spice. Initial notes of ripe blackberry, black cherry, and wild strawberry dominate, followed by an elegant spiced complexity of black pepper, clove, and star anise. As the wine breathes, undertones of cocoa, dried herbs, and a subtle balsamic touch emerge, alongside delicate hints of tobacco and leather. A faint mineral edge, reminiscent of the Majella mountains, lingers in the background, adding depth and refinement.

Taste: The palate is powerful and expansive, showcasing ripe tannins that are well-integrated, providing a balanced structure. Flavours mirror the aromatic profile, with dark berry fruits and spice leading to a harmonious and robust experience. The mouthfeel is rich yet refined, with bright acidity balancing the wine’s depth.

Finish: The finish is round, fresh, and long-lasting, with persistent aromatic notes that linger, reflecting the wine’s elegance and the meticulous vinification process. A final echo of black fruit and sweet spice fades into hints of dark chocolate and earthy minerality, leaving a sophisticated and structured aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva pairs exceptionally well with traditional dishes such as "Pecora alla Callara" (a rustic sheep stew), oven-baked or grilled meats, and matured cheeses. The bold tannins and fruit concentration also make it an excellent companion to game meats, slow-cooked beef, or hearty tomato-based pasta dishes. Serving at a temperature of 16-17°C is recommended, and decanting for approximately 1.5 hours before drinking will enhance its complex flavours and aromas.

The 2020 Binomio Montepulciano d'Abruzzo Riserva is a stunning expression of the region, highlighting the potential of Montepulciano through modern winemaking while staying true to its traditional roots.
