San Guglielmo, Brunello di Montalcino 2016
San Guglielmo, a family-run winery established in the early 2000s, is located on the western slopes of Montalcino, Tuscany, at approximately 400 meters above sea level. Founded by Ilaria and her husband, Mike, the estate continues the legacy of Ilaria's grandfather, Guglielmo, one of the founding members of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium. Their inaugural vintage, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino, reflects their dedication to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking practices. The vineyards benefit from a unique microclimate, with sea breezes from the Maremma and the natural Mediterranean vegetation contributing to the terroir. The wine is crafted exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, fermented in stainless steel tanks, and aged for two years in large oak barrels, followed by a minimum of four months in the bottle before release.
Appearance: In the glass, the 2016 Brunello di Montalcino presents a ruby red colour with bright garnet reflections, indicating its vibrancy and potential for aging. The wine's clarity and brilliance reflect meticulous vinification practices.
Aroma: The nose offers a rich bouquet, unfolding aromas of rose and peony, followed by notes of plum and blackberry bramble. Subtle hints of mace and underbrush add complexity to the aromatic profile.
Taste: On the palate, this Brunello is bright and juicy, with lively red berry fruit flavours and balanced acidity that gently envelops the polished tannins. The medium-bodied structure is complemented by a harmonious interplay of fruit and subtle spice, reflecting the unique terroir of the western Montalcino slopes.
Finish: The finish is succulent and refreshing, with lingering notes of red fruit and a subtle minerality. The well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity suggest excellent aging potential, allowing the wine to develop further complexity over time.
Food Pairing: This Brunello di Montalcino pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. It complements traditional Tuscan fare such as pappardelle with wild boar ragù or ribollita, a hearty vegetable and bread soup. The wine's acidity and fruit profile also make it an excellent match for grilled meats, including lamb chops or bistecca alla Fiorentina. For cheese lovers, aged Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano-Reggiano enhance the wine's nuanced flavours. Serving at a temperature of 16–18°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and depth of flavour.
The 2016 San Guglielmo Brunello di Montalcino exemplifies the estate's dedication to crafting wines that honour the rich viticultural heritage of Montalcino, offering a refined and memorable tasting experience
