Ca’ di Frara is a well-regarded family-run winery in Lombardy’s Oltrepò Pavese, a region known as one of Italy’s top areas for Pinot Nero (Pinot Noir). Founded in 1905, the estate has passed through generations, with current winemaker Luca Bellani focusing on sustainable viticulture and terroir-driven wines. Oltrepò Pavese’s cool climate and diverse soils provide ideal conditions for Pinot Nero, which thrives here, producing wines that balance elegance, freshness, and complexity. The Ca’ di Frara Pinot Nero DOP 2022 is a pure expression of the grape, showcasing the finesse and structure that this region is capable of achieving.

The vineyards are located in the rolling hills of Oltrepò Pavese, where limestone-rich and clay soils contribute to the wine’s bright acidity and refined tannins. The 2022 vintage saw a warm growing season, allowing for optimal ripeness while preserving freshness thanks to cooler nights. Hand-harvested grapes were fermented in stainless steel to retain fruit purity, with a short ageing period in neutral vessels to highlight the varietal’s natural character.

Appearance: Light ruby red with delicate garnet hues at the rim. The wine’s transparency and bright clarity highlight its youthful vibrancy, with graceful, fast-moving legs hinting at its elegant structure.

Aroma: Fragrant and expressive, with aromas of wild strawberries, red cherries, and pomegranate. Subtle floral notes of rose petal and violet add finesse, while gentle hints of white pepper and dried herbs bring complexity. A whisper of earthiness in the background evokes classic Old World Pinot Nero charm.

Taste: Silky and fresh, with a lively acidity that lifts the juicy red berry flavours. Notes of cranberry and raspberry intertwine with delicate spice and a touch of minerality. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, providing a soft but structured mouthfeel. A slight savoury edge adds depth, making the wine both vibrant and elegant.

Finish: Clean and refined, with lingering red fruit, a touch of spice, and a subtle earthy undertone. The bright acidity keeps the wine refreshing, inviting another sip while leaving a gentle floral and mineral impression.

Food pairing:
Duck breast with cherry sauce – The wine’s bright acidity cuts through the richness of the duck, while its red fruit flavours complement the sweetness of the cherry glaze, creating a beautifully balanced pairing.

Wild mushroom tagliatelle – The delicate earthiness of the Pinot Nero enhances the umami richness of wild mushrooms, while the wine’s freshness lifts the creamy texture of the dish, making for an elegant and harmonious combination.
