Vergelegen Wine Estate, established in 1700 in the Stellenbosch region of South Africa, has a storied history of producing exceptional wines. The Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 exemplifies the estate's dedication to quality and tradition, showcasing the depth and complexity of Cabernet Sauvignon grown in this renowned terroir.

This wine is crafted from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon grapes selected from Vergelegen’s Rooiland and Stonepine vineyards. These north to northwest-facing vineyards are planted on granite, Hutton, and Clovelly soils, providing a unique terroir that imparts structure and concentration. The grapes undergo fermentation in both open and closed tanks at a controlled temperature of 25°C, with regular pump-overs every six hours to maximise colour and tannin extraction. The wine is then aged for 16 months in French oak barrels, 40% of which are new, sourced from prestigious cooperages to ensure finesse and balance.

Appearance: The wine displays a deep, rich plum colour with a vibrant ruby rim, indicating its concentration and potential for ageing. The near-opaque core hints at its density, while the slow-forming legs suggest a well-structured body with balanced tannins and depth. A slight garnet tinge at the rim suggests the beginning of its evolution, promising further development over time.

Aroma: On the nose, it reveals a complex bouquet of blackcurrants, ripe plums, and dark cherries, intertwined with subtle spice and savoury notes. Elegant layers of cedar, cigar box, and pencil shavings reflect its time in quality oak barrels, while hints of cocoa, liquorice, and dried herbs add further depth. As the wine opens up, a delicate touch of crushed violets and graphite emerges, enhancing its aromatic complexity.

Taste: The palate is full-bodied and richly textured, showcasing layers of dark fruit flavours, including cassis, blackcurrant, and ripe plum. These are seamlessly interwoven with spicy undertones of clove, nutmeg, and a touch of dark chocolate. The refined tannins provide structure and elegance, while a fresh streak of acidity keeps the wine lively and well-balanced. A subtle mineral edge, derived from the estate’s unique soils, adds finesse to the mid-palate.

Finish: The finish is long-lasting and refined, with the harmonious blend of fruit and oak nuances lingering gracefully. Notes of black fruit, roasted coffee beans, and a hint of tobacco leaf evolve over time, leaving a polished and sophisticated aftertaste. The tannins remain firm yet smooth, ensuring the wine’s ability to age gracefully for several years. A final touch of dark berry compote and crushed rock minerality provides an elegant and lingering impression.

Food Pairing: This Cabernet Sauvignon pairs beautifully with hearty dishes such as rib-eye steaks or lamb cutlets, where the wine’s robust structure complements the richness of the meat. It also pairs well with braised short ribs, venison, or a rich beef bourguignon. For a vegetarian option, a wild mushroom and lentil stew or a black truffle risotto would complement the wine’s savoury complexity. Aged cheeses such as Comté or mature cheddar also make an excellent pairing, highlighting the wine’s depth and refined tannins.

The Vergelegen Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 is accessible now but will reward careful cellaring over the next eight to ten years, offering a sophisticated and memorable tasting experience.
