Tenute del Cabreo, Cabreo Il Borgo Supertuscan 2017 (Cabernet, Sangiovese)
Tenute del Cabreo, established by the Folonari family in the heart of Tuscany, has been producing exceptional wines since the early 1980s. 'Il Borgo', first introduced with the 1982 vintage, stands as one of the pioneering Super Tuscan wines, artfully blending traditional Sangiovese with international varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The estate spans 124 acres near Greve in Chianti, with vineyards situated at an elevation of 300 metres, benefiting from stony soils that impart complexity and aging potential to the wines.
The 2017 vintage presented unique challenges, including an April frost that reduced yields but resulted in grapes of exceptional concentration and balance. The blend for this vintage comprises equal parts Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot. Fermentation occurred at controlled temperatures with extended maceration to enhance richness and texture. The wine matured for 24 months in oak barrels, followed by an additional six months in bottle before release.
Appearance: The wine exhibits a deep ruby hue with garnet reflections, showcasing both youthful intensity and signs of graceful aging. The core is rich and opaque, hinting at the wine’s concentration, while the rim transitions into a lighter, slightly amber-tinged edge. When swirled, the wine coats the glass with slow-moving, pronounced legs, indicating a well-structured body with a balanced alcohol presence. Its clarity and brilliance suggest meticulous vinification, highlighting the depth and complexity within.
Aroma: On the nose, 'Il Borgo' presents an intricate bouquet of dark cherries, ripe damson plums, and crushed blackberries. These fruit notes are elegantly interwoven with layers of liquorice, cedarwood, and a touch of sweet tobacco. As the wine opens, hints of cardamom, dried violets, and graphite emerge, adding depth and complexity. The aromatic intensity is further enhanced by subtle balsamic and earthy undertones, reflecting the unique terroir of the region.
Taste: The palate is immediately greeted with a robust yet refined structure, where rich flavours of black cherry, cassis, and ripe redcurrants dominate. The Sangiovese component provides bright acidity and vibrancy, while Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot contribute to a deeper, more rounded mouthfeel. Well-integrated tannins offer a firm yet velvety texture, ensuring excellent balance. Mid-palate notes of dark chocolate, espresso, and toasted spices add to the wine’s complexity, leading to a dynamic and expressive tasting experience.
Finish: The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of black fruit, tobacco, and dried Mediterranean herbs. A refined minerality and a touch of oak-driven spice provide additional layers that evolve as the wine lingers on the palate. The tannins remain supple but structured, ensuring a polished and elegant aftertaste that hints at the wine’s aging potential. A final whisper of dark cocoa and balsamic depth leaves a lasting impression of finesse and power.
Food Pairing: 'Il Borgo' pairs exceptionally well with roasted meats, such as beef or lamb, and is an excellent companion to aged hard cheeses. Its robust structure and complex flavour profile also make it a suitable match for game dishes and hearty stews. Serving at a temperature of 18–20°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and depth.
This vintage exemplifies Tenute del Cabreo’s dedication to crafting wines that harmoniously blend tradition with innovation, offering a profound expression of Tuscany’s rich viticultural heritage.
