Piero Mancini, Cannonau di Sardegna Doc 2020 (Cannonau)
Cantina delle Vigne di Piero Mancini, established in the 1980s in Sardinia's Gallura region, is celebrated for its dedication to producing wines that embody the island's rich viticultural heritage. The 'Falcale' Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2020 is a testament to this commitment, showcasing the unique characteristics of the Cannonau grape, known elsewhere as Grenache.
The vineyards, planted between 2000 and 2005, are situated at altitudes ranging from 100 to 350 metres above sea level, with east-southeast exposures. The granitic soils impart a distinct minerality to the wine. Hand-harvested in late September through early October, the grapes undergo a seven-day maceration and controlled low-temperature fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then aged for 6 to 8 months in stainless steel, preserving its fresh and fruity profile.
Appearance: The wine exhibits a deep ruby-garnet colour with brilliant highlights, indicating its youthful vibrancy and evolving complexity. The rim shows a slight transition to a lighter garnet hue, reflecting its development. Swirling the glass reveals medium viscosity, with slow-forming legs that suggest balanced alcohol and body. Its clarity and brilliance indicate careful vinification and purity.
Aroma: On the nose, 'Falcale' presents a persistent and inviting bouquet, with an expressive mix of ripe cherries, crushed raspberries, and sun-dried red plums. Floral hints of violet and dried roses add elegance, while underlying notes of wild Mediterranean herbs, warm spices, and a touch of black pepper lend depth and complexity. As it opens, subtle earthy and balsamic nuances emerge, enhancing its aromatic intrigue.
Taste: The palate is greeted with a warm and smooth texture, revealing layers of juicy red fruit, including black cherry, redcurrant, and a hint of wild strawberry. The medium-bodied structure is well-supported by soft yet firm tannins, providing a velvety mouthfeel. A refreshing acidity balances the richness, keeping the wine lively and expressive. Delicate notes of clove, liquorice, and crushed thyme unfold mid-palate, adding a savoury element that complements the fruit-driven core. A subtle mineral streak runs through the wine, reflecting the granite-rich soils of Sardinia.
Finish: The finish is smooth, persistent, and well-rounded, with lingering notes of ripe red berries, baking spices, and a gentle hint of cocoa. The tannins, though structured, soften gracefully, leaving a refined texture. As the wine fades, whispers of dried herbs and a touch of smoky minerality add depth, ensuring an elegant and memorable aftertaste.
Food Pairing: This 'Falcale' Cannonau di Sardegna DOC 2020 pairs exceptionally well with traditional Sardinian dishes, grilled red meats, and slow-roasted game. It also complements aged Pecorino cheese, enhancing its nutty and savoury characteristics. Its versatility makes it a great match for herb-infused lamb, rich tomato-based pasta dishes, or even mushroom risotto. Serving at a temperature of 18°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structure.
This wine exemplifies Piero Mancini's dedication to crafting authentic Sardinian wines that reflect the island's unique terroir and winemaking traditions, offering a beautifully balanced and expressive experience.
