Castelvecchio is a family-run estate located in the heart of Chianti, in San Casciano in Val di Pesa, within the prestigious Chianti Colli Fiorentini subzone. Known for its dedication to sustainable viticulture and traditional winemaking, the estate produces wines that authentically express the Tuscan terroir. The Chianti Vigna la Quercia Riserva 2017 is a refined and structured expression of Sangiovese, crafted from a single vineyard and aged to enhance its complexity and elegance.

The Vigna la Quercia vineyard is planted on a mix of clay and limestone soils, providing excellent drainage and concentration in the fruit. The 2017 vintage was marked by a warm growing season, resulting in rich, ripe fruit while maintaining Chianti’s hallmark freshness. The wine is composed primarily of Sangiovese, with a small percentage of Canaiolo and Colorino to add depth and aromatic complexity. Aged for at least 24 months in large oak barrels and refined further in bottle, it showcases both power and finesse.

Appearance: Deep ruby red with garnet reflections at the rim, indicating early signs of development. The wine’s clarity is excellent, with slow, fine legs suggesting both structure and elegance.

Aroma: Rich and inviting, with notes of ripe black cherries, red plums, and dried cranberries. Subtle floral hints of violets and dried roses emerge, complemented by undertones of leather, tobacco, and sweet spices such as cinnamon and clove. A touch of earthy minerality adds further complexity.

Taste: Medium to full-bodied, with a firm yet refined tannic structure. The vibrant acidity balances the ripe red fruit, creating a lively and layered palate. Flavours of cherry, raspberry, and dark berry compote unfold, interwoven with nuances of cedar, dried herbs, and a gentle savoury edge. The oak ageing is well-integrated, adding polish without overpowering the wine’s natural character.

Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering notes of red fruit, spice, and a hint of balsamic. The tannins remain firm yet silky, ensuring great ageing potential while keeping the wine beautifully balanced and expressive.

Food pairing:
Bistecca alla Fiorentina – The wine’s tannins and acidity cut through the richness of the steak, enhancing the savoury charred flavours while complementing the meat’s juiciness.

Pappardelle with wild boar ragu – The deep fruit and earthy spice of the wine harmonise with the slow-cooked game, while its bright acidity lifts the richness of the sauce, creating a perfect balance.
