Kershaw 'Clonal Selection' Elgin Chardonnay 2020 is a distinguished white wine from South Africa's Elgin region, crafted by the esteemed Kershaw Wines. Founded by Master of Wine Richard Kershaw in 2012, the winery is celebrated for producing clonally selected, site-specific, cool-climate wines that express the unique terroir of their origins. The 'Clonal Selection' range focuses on meticulously chosen clones and vineyard parcels, showcasing the diversity and potential of South African viticulture.

The 2020 vintage is composed of 100% Chardonnay, utilizing Dijon clones CY96, CY95, CY76, and the Entav clone CY548. These clones are cultivated across eight small parcels within the Elgin Valley, South Africa's coolest wine region, situated on an inland plateau at an altitude of 300 to 500 metres. The region's cool climate, influenced by its elevation and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean, allows for slow ripening, resulting in complex flavours and balanced acidity. The winemaking process involves handpicking the grapes in the early morning, gentle whole-bunch pressing, and gravity-fed transfer of the juice directly to French oak barrels sourced from Burgundian coopers. Each clone and soil type is micro-vinified as separate batches, with the wine resting on its lees for eleven months to enhance texture and complexity. In 2019, the average new oak usage was 53%, exclusively in 228-litre barrels.

Appearance: Light yellow-straw hue with brilliant clarity, reflecting its purity and precision. The wine's brightness suggests a youthful vibrancy, while the medium intensity indicates elegance and finesse.

Aroma: The nose is expressive and inviting, offering complex aromas of lemon, gardenia, chalk, and powdered rock. There is a purity and lift that epitomises the outstanding 2020 vintage.

Taste: On the palate, the wine is medium-bodied with a harmonious balance between fruit and acidity. Flavours of white peach, nectarine, and red apple are complemented by a minerally undertone, likely derived from the unique terroir of the Elgin Valley. The integration of French oak imparts subtle notes of vanilla and spice, adding depth and complexity to the mid-palate. The wine's structure is reinforced by a creamy texture, contributing to its complexity and depth.

Finish: The finish is extended and persistent, with the concentrated fruit and lively acidity leaving a lasting impression. The harmonious balance between the ripe fruit flavours, subtle oak influence, and fine minerality ensures a refined and satisfying conclusion.

Food Pairing: This Chardonnay pairs beautifully with rich seafood dishes such as seared scallops or lobster bisque, where the wine's acidity balances the richness of the dish. It also complements creamy poultry dishes like chicken Alfredo or turkey tetrazzini, enhancing the savoury depth. For a vegetarian option, consider a decadent truffle risotto or wild mushroom tagliatelle, as the wine's minerality and freshness harmonise with the earthy umami flavours.

The Kershaw 'Clonal Selection' Elgin Chardonnay 2020 exemplifies the winery's dedication to producing wines that are both expressive and reflective of their terroir, offering wine enthusiasts a nuanced and memorable tasting experience.
