Los Cerros de San Juan, Uruguay’s oldest winery, was founded in 1854 and remains a benchmark for quality winemaking in the Colonia region. The Cuna de Piedra Reserve range represents the estate’s dedication to crafting wines with depth, elegance, and a strong expression of terroir. This Chardonnay is a refined example of how Uruguay’s maritime climate and limestone-rich soils can produce wines with both freshness and complexity.

The vineyards benefit from cooling breezes from the nearby Río de la Plata, which moderate temperatures and allow for a long, even ripening period. The limestone and clay soils contribute to the wine’s mineral character and structured acidity. Careful winemaking, including partial barrel fermentation and lees ageing, enhances the Chardonnay’s texture while preserving its vibrant fruit and natural freshness.

Appearance: Pale gold with bright, sunlit reflections, showing clarity and a slight viscosity in the glass. The colour suggests a balance between freshness and richness, hinting at some barrel influence.

Aroma: Ripe orchard fruits of golden apple and pear dominate, followed by layers of citrus zest, white peach, and a delicate floral lift. Subtle notes of vanilla, toasted almond, and a touch of brioche emerge from the well-integrated oak, adding complexity without overwhelming the fruit. A gentle minerality lingers in the background.

Taste: Elegant and well-structured, with a balance of crisp acidity and a rounded, creamy texture. Flavours of ripe apple, lemon curd, and peach unfold, complemented by a hint of buttered toast and a light touch of spice from oak ageing. The mid-palate offers depth while remaining fresh and vibrant, with a mineral streak adding finesse.

Finish: Long and refined, with lingering citrus and stone fruit notes, accented by a delicate nuttiness and a whisper of vanilla. The acidity carries the flavours gracefully, leaving a fresh and satisfying impression.

Food Pairing: Pan-seared scallops with a lemon butter sauce highlight the wine’s bright acidity and creamy texture, creating a harmonious pairing. Roast chicken with tarragon and garlic enhances the depth of the Chardonnay, with the herbal notes complementing the subtle oak influence
