Los Cerros de San Juan, Goleta Tannat/Tempranillo 2020
Los Cerros de San Juan, established in 1854, is Uruguay's oldest winery, renowned for producing high-quality wines that reflect the unique terroir of the Colonia region. Their Goleta Tannat/Tempranillo 2020 is a bold yet balanced blend, combining the robust tannic structure of Tannat with the smooth, fruit-driven nature of Tempranillo. Sourced from vineyards with well-drained soils, this wine is carefully aged to enhance its complexity, resulting in a refined and harmonious expression.
Appearance: Deep ruby red with violet hues, indicating its youthful vibrancy and concentration. The wine has a nearly opaque core, with slow-moving, well-defined legs that suggest a full-bodied structure and balanced alcohol.
Aroma: Expressive and layered, with aromas of ripe blackberries, dark cherries, and plums. The Tannat brings depth and intensity, while the Tempranillo adds notes of red cherry, spice, and subtle floral hints. A touch of vanilla and toasted oak emerges from barrel ageing, enhancing the wine’s complexity.
Taste: Medium to full-bodied with a well-structured palate. Rich dark fruit flavours of blackberry, plum, and cassis intertwine with earthy undertones and hints of liquorice and black pepper. The tannins are firm yet well-integrated, offering a velvety mouthfeel, while bright acidity provides balance and freshness.
Finish: Long and persistent, with lingering dark berries, spice, and a subtle oak influence. The tannins remain present but refined, ensuring further ageing potential. A final touch of cocoa and dried herbs adds depth and elegance.
Food Pairing: Pairs beautifully with slow-cooked beef short ribs, where the wine’s tannins balance the dish’s richness while enhancing its savoury elements. Also an excellent match with aged Manchego cheese, as the wine’s dark fruit and spice complement the cheese’s nutty, complex character.
