Frescobaldi, Gorgona Bianco 2021 (Vermentino, Ansonico)
Gorgona Bianco is a distinctive white wine produced through a collaboration between the Frescobaldi family and the inmates of the Gorgona Penal Institute, situated on the small island of Gorgona off the Tuscan coast. This project, initiated in 2011, aims to provide inmates with practical viticulture experience, facilitating their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The wine is crafted from Vermentino and Ansonica grapes, cultivated organically on a two-hectare vineyard established in 1999, with additional plantings in 2015 and 2018. The vineyard benefits from an east-facing orientation and iron-rich soils, contributing to the wine's unique character.
Appearance: In the glass, Gorgona Bianco 2021 displays a brilliant straw-yellow hue with glimmering golden tinges, reflecting its vibrant and youthful nature. The wine's clarity and luminosity are evident, with slow-forming, well-defined legs indicating a balanced structure and moderate alcohol content.
Aroma: The bouquet is rich and inviting, offering marvellous aromas of Mediterranean shrubs, broom, mastic, and aromatic herbs, complemented by hints of white flowers such as hawthorn, camomile, and freesia. Subtle notes of banana, pineapple, and other exotic fruits emerge, rounded off with extra-fresh hints of citrus fruits like grapefruit and citron. As the wine opens up, delicate mineral undertones and a whisper of sea breeze add depth and complexity to the aromatic profile.
Taste: On the palate, Gorgona Bianco 2021 is fresh and smooth, with a remarkable sapidity that reflects its maritime origins. Flavours of ripe white peach, pineapple, and citrus zest are harmoniously balanced by herbal nuances and a subtle minerality. The wine's vibrant acidity ensures a lively and refreshing mouthfeel, while the well-integrated structure provides depth and elegance.
Finish: The finish is lingering and inviting, with persistent notes of fresh fruit, aromatic herbs, and a delicate saline touch that evokes the essence of the island's terroir. The wine's balanced acidity and smooth texture leave the palate refreshed, with a lasting impression of elegance and complexity.
Food Pairing: Gorgona Bianco 2021 pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes, including seafood risotto, grilled fish, and light pasta dishes. Consider pairing it with a classic Tuscan seafood stew, where the wine's freshness and sapidity complement the rich flavours of the dish. A salad of heirloom tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and basil drizzled with extra virgin olive oil would also highlight the wine's vibrant acidity and aromatic complexity.
Overall, Gorgona Bianco 2021 exemplifies the exceptional quality and tradition of the Gorgona project, offering a wine that is both approachable in its youth and capable of developing further complexity with time. Its remarkable depth, structure, and maritime-influenced character make it a compelling choice for those seeking a unique and meaningful wine experience.
