Gorgona Rosso is a unique wine produced through a collaboration between the Frescobaldi family and the inmates of the Gorgona Penal Institute, located on the small island of Gorgona off the Tuscan coast. This project began in 2015 with the cultivation of a few rows of Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero vines, organically farmed and aged in terracotta jars. The initiative aims to provide inmates with practical viticulture experience, facilitating their rehabilitation and reintegration into society. The combination of native Tuscan varietals and the island's maritime influence results in a wine with remarkable character and elegance.

Appearance: In the glass, Gorgona Rosso 2020 presents a brilliant and vibrant deep red colour with luminous ruby highlights, reflecting its youthful vitality and the rich pigmentation of the Sangiovese and Vermentino Nero grapes. The wine exhibits excellent clarity, and its moderate viscosity creates slow, well-defined legs that hint at a structured yet fresh composition. The colour intensity suggests both concentration and finesse, indicative of its balanced extraction and careful aging.

Aroma: The bouquet is highly aromatic and complex, exuding a mix of Mediterranean herbs, spices, and red fruit. Ripe blueberries, red currants, and blackberries emerge at the forefront, followed by hints of rosemary, sage, and a touch of star anise. Floral undertones of wild violets and dried rose petals add an elegant lift, while subtle earthy nuances and a delicate minerality enhance the wine’s depth. As it evolves in the glass, notes of black tea, crushed rock, and a whisper of balsamic round out the aromatic profile.

Taste: On the palate, Gorgona Rosso 2020 is medium-bodied with a seamless balance between freshness and depth. The interplay of juicy red and black fruits, delicate spice, and savoury herbal notes creates a dynamic yet elegant flavour profile. The fine-grained tannins are present yet well-integrated, providing structure without overwhelming the palate. A touch of salinity, influenced by the coastal climate, adds an extra layer of complexity, making the wine lively and intriguing. The vibrant acidity ensures brightness and lift, enhancing the wine’s drinkability while preserving its aging potential.

Finish: The finish is long and persistent, with lingering notes of fresh wild berries, dried herbs, and a gentle saline edge that reflects the maritime terroir. Hints of sweet spice, soft floral tones, and a touch of black pepper leave an elegant and memorable aftertaste. The refined tannins gently fade, ensuring a polished and harmonious conclusion that invites another sip.

Food Pairing: Gorgona Rosso 2020 pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. It complements roasted meats such as herb-crusted lamb or wild boar, where the wine's acidity and structured tannins enhance the dish's richness. Aged Pecorino Toscano or Parmigiano-Reggiano provide a wonderful contrast, balancing the wine’s bright fruit and subtle savoury elements. The wine also works well with Mediterranean-inspired vegetable dishes, such as grilled aubergine with olive oil and rosemary, or tomato-based pasta dishes with aromatic herbs.

Overall, Gorgona Rosso 2020 is a strikingly unique expression of its island terroir, combining elegance, complexity, and freshness. With its maritime influence, rich aromatic profile, and balanced structure, this wine offers both immediate pleasure and the potential to evolve gracefully over time.
