Kershaw, GPS Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge Pinot Noir 2019
Kershaw 'GPS Series' Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge Pinot Noir 2019 is a distinguished red wine from the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge appellation in South Africa, crafted by the esteemed Kershaw Wines. Founded by Master of Wine Richard Kershaw in 2012, the winery is celebrated for producing clonally selected, site-specific, cool-climate wines that express the unique terroir of their origins. The 'GPS Series' (Grape Positioning System) focuses on small parcels of exceptional fruit selected from carefully chosen vineyards outside the Elgin Valley, showcasing the diversity of South African terroirs.
The 2019 vintage is composed of 100% Pinot Noir, utilizing French clones PN777 and PN115. These clones are cultivated in two small parcels grown on Bokkeveld Shale soils in a protected lee of the Hemel-en-Aarde Ridge—a cool-climate area renowned for producing high-quality Pinot Noir. The region's unique microclimate, influenced by the nearby Atlantic Ocean, provides cooling breezes that contribute to the wine's freshness and elegance. The winemaking process involves meticulous handpicking of the grapes, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit flavours. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels, with 21.8% being new oak, to enhance complexity and depth.
Appearance: Bright ruby-red with a translucent core and a subtle garnet rim, suggesting a wine of elegance and structure. The wine’s clarity and vibrancy indicate purity, while the fine legs hint at its delicate texture and well-balanced acidity.
Aroma: Expressive and inviting, with captivating floral notes underscored by purity, focus, and freshness. Aromas of black cherry, ripe pomegranate, and raspberry intermingle with hints of rose petal, dried hibiscus, and cranberry. Subtle spice notes of clove and cinnamon emerge, complemented by earthy undertones of forest floor, dried leaves, and crushed stone, reflecting its terroir-driven nature.
Taste: Medium-bodied with a silky and refined mouthfeel. Bright red fruit flavours of black cherry, redcurrant, and wild strawberry are layered with hints of dried herbs, savoury spice, and a touch of orange zest. A mineral-driven mid-palate adds tension and depth, while the fine-grained tannins provide structure without overpowering the delicate fruit. A whisper of well-integrated oak imparts subtle notes of vanilla and nutmeg, enhancing the complexity without overshadowing the wine’s vibrant freshness.
Finish: Long, precise, and elegant, with lingering notes of juicy red berries, fragrant spice, and a touch of savoury minerality. The fine, powdery tannins leave a gentle grip on the palate, while the balanced acidity ensures a fresh and vibrant aftertaste. The wine’s structure and finesse suggest excellent ageing potential.
Food Pairing: This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes such as duck confit, where its bright acidity and red fruit complement the richness of the meat. It also harmonises well with roasted quail or herb-crusted lamb, as the wine’s subtle spice and earthy notes enhance the savoury depth of the dish. For a vegetarian option, consider a wild mushroom risotto or truffle-infused pasta, where the wine’s minerality and freshness highlight the umami flavours. For cheese lovers, a mild, creamy Brie or Camembert will accentuate the wine’s fruitiness and silky texture. Best served slightly chilled to enhance its aromatic complexity and vibrancy.
