Oak Valley Estate, established in 1898 in the cool-climate region of Elgin, South Africa, is renowned for its commitment to producing elegant, terroir-driven wines. The Groenlandberg series, named after the towering Groenlandberg Mountain Range that influences the estate's unique microclimate, showcases the pinnacle of their viticultural efforts. The 2022 Groenlandberg Pinot Noir exemplifies this dedication, capturing the essence of its origin.

The vineyards are situated on south-facing slopes at elevations between 430 and 470 metres above sea level. These higher altitudes, combined with the cool maritime breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean, create an environment conducive to the slow ripening of Pinot Noir grapes, preserving their delicate flavours and natural acidity. The soils, rich in clay and shale, provide excellent drainage while retaining sufficient moisture, fostering deep root development. In the cellar, a philosophy of minimal intervention is embraced. Whole-bunch fermentations are conducted with gentle punch-downs to extract colour and flavour without imparting harsh tannins. The wine is then matured in French oak barrels, with a judicious use of new oak to enhance complexity while allowing the fruit to remain at the forefront.

Appearance: The wine presents a vibrant ruby hue with a translucent rim, indicative of its youth and purity. Its clarity and brilliance reflect meticulous winemaking practices, while the medium viscosity suggests a balanced structure. A subtle garnet tinge hints at the beginnings of maturity, adding an extra layer of depth to its visual appeal.

Aroma: Enticing aromas of red and black cherries mingle with earthy notes of tilled soil and beetroot. Subtle hints of blueberry and a touch of cinnamon spice add complexity and depth to the bouquet. Delicate floral undertones of dried rose petals and a whisper of savoury herbs provide further intrigue.

Taste: The palate is greeted with ripe strawberry and red cherry flavours, complemented by a lovely coating texture. The wine’s cool-climate origins impart a refreshing acidity that balances the fruit’s sweetness, while well-rounded tannins provide structure and grip. Layers of subtle spice, hints of forest floor, and a delicate minerality add to the complexity.

Finish: The finish is lengthy and refreshing, with the vibrant acidity leaving a clean, invigorating sensation. Lingering notes of red fruit and a subtle spiciness persist, gradually evolving into hints of dried herbs and a light smokiness. The fine-grained tannins provide a gentle grip, ensuring a balanced and persistent aftertaste. A delicate touch of savoury umami lingers alongside the final burst of bright red berry freshness, leaving a refined and elegant impression.

Food Pairing: This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a variety of dishes. It complements roasted duck breast with a cherry glaze, where the wine’s acidity balances the richness of the meat. For a vegetarian option, consider a wild mushroom risotto; the earthy flavours harmonise with the wine’s beetroot and soil notes. Aged cheeses such as Gruyère or Comté also make an excellent pairing, highlighting the wine’s balance of fruit and savoury undertones.

The Oak Valley Groenlandberg Pinot Noir 2022 is a testament to the estate’s dedication to crafting wines that authentically express their terroir, offering a sophisticated and memorable tasting experience.
