Fattoria Castelvecchio, Orme in Rosso 2019 (Sangiovese, Merlot, Petit Verdot)
Fattoria Castelvecchio, located in San Casciano Val di Pesa within the Chianti Colli Fiorentini region of Tuscany, has been producing wines that reflect the passion and expertise of three generations of winemakers. 'Orme in Rosso' is a testament to this legacy, crafted as a family blend that highlights their dedication to winemaking. Notably, this wine is produced exclusively in odd-numbered vintages, allowing each grape variety to reach its optimal expression. The 2019 vintage comprises 50% Merlot, 30% Sangiovese, and 20% Petit Verdot, sourced from organically farmed vineyards. Fermentation occurs at controlled temperatures with daily pump-overs and gentle pressing to ensure high extraction. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak barriques, followed by further refinement in the bottle.
Appearance: In the glass, 'Orme in Rosso' 2019 exhibits a deep ruby red colour, indicative of its richness and concentration. The core is dark and dense, while the rim shows a gradual fade to a lighter crimson hue, hinting at its elegance and balance. The wine’s texture is evident when swirled, with thick, slow-moving legs clinging to the glass, suggesting a well-structured body and integrated alcohol. Its clarity and brilliance reflect meticulous vinification, ensuring a vibrant yet refined visual presentation.
Aroma: The nose is greeted with an intense and fragrant bouquet of mature red and dark berries, complemented by balsamic notes and hints of Mediterranean herbs. These aromas intertwine harmoniously, offering complexity and depth. Subtle layers of vanilla, cocoa, and sweet spices from oak aging emerge with time, adding further sophistication.
Taste: On the palate, this full-bodied wine reveals a fruity profile with spicy hints. Flavours of ripe cherries and blackberries are prominent, accompanied by subtle notes of black pepper and liquorice. The wine's elegant body is supported by harmonious tannins and a light savoury, mineral undertone, contributing to its overall balance and structure. A touch of dark chocolate and roasted coffee bean lingers mid-palate, enhancing the wine’s complexity.
Finish: The finish is persistent, with the rich fruit and spice notes gradually fading, leaving a pleasant aftertaste that invites another sip. A fine, dusty tannin structure lingers on the palate, while soft balsamic and toasted oak elements add refinement. The well-integrated tannins and balanced acidity ensure a smooth and satisfying conclusion, promising further development with bottle aging.
Food Pairing: 'Orme in Rosso' pairs exceptionally well with red meats, whether grilled or roasted. It also complements pasta dishes with rich and savoury meat sauces. The wine’s structure makes it an excellent match for braised lamb, wild game, or aged pecorino cheese. Serving at a temperature of 16–18°C is recommended to fully appreciate its aromatic nuances and structure.
