Primosic, Pinot Grigio Skin 2020
Primosic is a family-run winery in Friuli-Venezia Giulia, known for its commitment to traditional winemaking and the expression of indigenous grape varieties. With deep roots in the Collio region, the estate has been a pioneer in producing skin-contact Pinot Grigio, a style that highlights the grape’s natural depth and complexity. The 2020 vintage experienced a balanced growing season, allowing the grapes to achieve full ripeness while retaining their characteristic freshness and acidity.
Pinot Grigio Skin is made using extended maceration, where the grape skins remain in contact with the juice during fermentation. This process gives the wine its distinctive copper hue and adds layers of texture and structure. Fermented with native yeasts and aged on the lees in stainless steel, this wine retains purity while developing a refined and complex profile.
Appearance: Deep copper with amber reflections, shimmering with brightness. The wine’s colour is a result of extended skin contact, creating an elegant and distinctive visual appeal. A light viscosity hints at its textured mouthfeel.
Aroma: Expressive and layered, with notes of ripe apricot, blood orange, and dried peach. Floral hints of rose petals and hibiscus add elegance, while subtle herbal undertones of sage and thyme provide depth. As the wine opens, delicate notes of honey, almond, and spice emerge, enhancing its complexity.
Taste: Medium-bodied and structured, with flavours of orange zest, red apple, and wild berries. The skin contact imparts fine tannins that add a gentle grip, while bright acidity keeps the wine lively and well-balanced. Hints of ginger, white pepper, and a touch of salinity create an intriguing interplay of fruit, spice, and minerality.
Finish: Long and textured, with lingering citrus, dried fruit, and a subtle nutty bitterness. A delicate mineral streak enhances the wine’s structure, leaving a refined and refreshing impression. The combination of fruit, tannin, and acidity ensures a well-rounded and thought-provoking finish.
Food Pairing: A perfect match for chargrilled octopus with lemon and herbs, where the wine’s texture complements the smoky flavours. It also pairs beautifully with prosciutto-wrapped melon, balancing the sweet and savoury elements. For a plant-based option, try it with roasted cauliflower and tahini dressing, where the wine’s depth enhances the dish’s earthy and nutty notes.
