Pooley Pinot Noir 2024
Pooley Wines, established in 1985 by Denis and Margaret Pooley, is a family-owned vineyard that has grown to become one of Australia's most acclaimed cool-climate wine producers. Situated in Tasmania's Coal River Valley, the winery has flourished under the stewardship of three generations, with John Pooley expanding the estate by adding the Butcher's Hill Vineyard in 2003. Today, John's daughter Anna Pooley, an award-winning winemaker, leads the production with an eye toward tradition and innovation. Her meticulous approach to winemaking honours the family's legacy while elevating Pooley Wines to new heights of excellence. Recognised as the 2023 Winery of the Year by Halliday Wine Companion, Pooley's commitment to quality and family values is evident in every bottle.
The 2024 Pooley Pinot Noir is crafted from fruit sourced from the Butcher's Hill, Cooinda Vale, and select vineyards in the Coal River Valley. The wine was matured for eight months in a mix of French oak barriques and puncheons from François Frères and Cavin. This meticulous process ensures that the purity and character of the fruit shine through, resulting in a wine that is both distinctive and timeless.
Appearance: The wine exhibits a bright, clear ruby hue with medium intensity. The clarity is excellent, allowing light to dance through the glass, highlighting its youthful vibrancy. Swirling the wine reveals medium viscosity, with elegant legs slowly forming and descending down the glass, indicating a balanced alcohol content. The rim shows slight garnet tinges, suggesting its young age and freshness.
Aroma: On the nose, the 2024 Pooley Pinot Noir opens with inviting aromas of ripe red fruits, particularly raspberry and cherry, complemented by subtle hints of black pepper spice.
Taste: The palate is generous and full of flavour, with the red fruit profile carrying through. Rounded, firm tannins dry the palate and add richness, while a hint of black pepper introduces a touch of spice, harmonising with the tartness of sour cherries and the distinctive earthiness of the Coal River Valley.
Finish: The finish is delicate, bright, and beautifully persistent, lingering with notes of red berries, gentle spice, and a touch of savoury minerality. Fine-grained tannins provide a soft structure that extends the flavours elegantly, leaving a balanced impression of freshness and depth. Subtle oak influence adds a whisper of toasted vanilla, enhancing the wine’s refined and polished character.
Food Pairing: This Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with dishes such as lamb, eggplant, or duck breast, enhancing the dining experience with its harmonious flavours.
