Ca’di Frara, Riesling DOP 2022 (100% Riesling)
Ca’ di Frara is a family-owned winery in Oltrepò Pavese, Lombardy, a region known for producing high-quality white wines with great freshness and minerality. Established in 1905, the estate is committed to sustainable viticulture and minimal intervention, allowing the true expression of each grape variety. Their Riesling DOP 2022 is a pure expression of 100% Riesling, showcasing the varietal’s vibrant acidity, aromatic complexity, and structured minerality. The 2022 vintage benefited from warm days and cool nights, ensuring an excellent balance between ripeness and freshness.
The vineyards are situated on limestone and clay-rich soils, which enhance the wine’s crisp acidity and elegant structure. Fermented and aged in stainless steel, this Riesling is crafted to preserve its purity and bright fruit character while developing a refined texture.
Appearance: Pale straw yellow with delicate greenish reflections, shimmering with clarity. The brightness in the glass suggests freshness and vibrancy, while a slight viscosity hints at its structured yet elegant body.
Aroma: Fresh and aromatic, with vibrant notes of lime, green apple, and white peach. Floral hints of jasmine and elderflower add finesse, while subtle mineral undertones of wet stone and flint bring depth. As the wine opens, delicate honeyed notes and a whisper of petrol begin to emerge, a classic hallmark of fine Riesling.
Taste: Light to medium-bodied, with a crisp yet textured profile. Bright citrus flavours of lemon zest and grapefruit dominate, supported by ripe green apple and subtle white pear. The lively acidity gives the wine a refreshing energy, while a refined minerality provides balance and structure. A slight saline note adds an extra layer of complexity.
Finish: Long and zesty, with lingering citrus, green apple, and a delicate mineral character. A touch of honey and almond emerges towards the end, adding depth without losing the wine’s refreshing crispness. The acidity keeps the palate invigorated, making it both food-friendly and highly enjoyable on its own.
Food Pairing: A perfect match for seafood dishes such as grilled prawns or citrus-marinated seabass, where the wine’s acidity enhances the dish’s freshness. It also pairs beautifully with creamy goat cheese, complementing its tangy and slightly nutty flavours. For a plant-based option, try it with a fennel and orange salad, where the wine’s citrus and mineral notes mirror the dish’s bright and aromatic profile.
