The Smuggler's Boot GSM 2019 is a distinguished red wine from the Western Cape region of South Africa, produced by the esteemed Kershaw Wines. Founded by Master of Wine Richard Kershaw, the winery is celebrated for crafting meticulously made wines that reflect the unique terroir of South Africa's cool-climate regions. The 'Smuggler's Boot' range pays homage to the ingenuity of early South African winemakers who, during trade embargoes, smuggled grapevine cuttings into the country by concealing them in their Wellington boots.

The 2019 vintage is a blend of 51% Grenache, 40% Syrah, and 9% Mourvèdre, inspired by the classic Rhône Valley style. The grapes are sourced from select vineyards in the Western Cape, where the combination of high-altitude sites, rocky soils, and cool temperatures allows for slow ripening, resulting in grapes with exceptional balance and concentration. The winemaking approach is minimalistic, with fermentation occurring in stainless steel tanks to preserve the purity of fruit flavours. The wine is then briefly matured in older oak barrels to add complexity without imparting overt oak characteristics.

Appearance: Bright ruby-crimson with a vibrant, translucent core, reflecting the elegance of Grenache. A clear, vivid rim highlights its youthful vitality, while the slight depth in colour hints at the presence of Syrah and Mourvèdre, adding structure and intensity.

Aroma: Expressive and inviting, with lifted aromas of violets, cranberry, and Bing cherry. Layers of dark raspberry, ripe red plum, and wild strawberry emerge, accompanied by subtle notes of cracked black pepper, dried lavender, and a touch of smoked paprika. Hints of garrigue herbs and a delicate mineral edge add complexity and refinement.

Taste: Juicy and vibrant, with a silky entry that unfolds into layers of red and black fruits. Flavours of raspberry coulis, black cherry, and wild blueberries are complemented by the peppery spice of Syrah and the earthy, savoury tones of Mourvèdre. A touch of cocoa and sweet spice from gentle oak ageing adds warmth and balance. Fine, powdery tannins provide structure, while a delicate acidity ensures freshness and lift.

Finish: Long and refined, with lingering notes of red fruit, subtle spice, and a touch of minerality. The finely woven tannins leave a polished, velvety impression, while the wine’s vibrant acidity carries through to a clean and satisfying aftertaste.

Food Pairing: This GSM blend pairs beautifully with slow-roasted lamb shoulder, where the wine's dark fruit and savoury complexity complement the richness of the dish. It also harmonises well with grilled venison steaks, as the wine's spice and earthy notes enhance the gamey flavours. For a vegetarian option, consider a hearty ratatouille or a mushroom and lentil stew, where the wine's acidity and fruit profile balance the earthy and savoury elements of the dishes. Best enjoyed slightly below room temperature to highlight its freshness and aromatic complexity.
