This box includes six 375ml bottles.
J. Hofstätter is one of Alto Adige’s most prestigious wineries, known for producing expressive and refined wines that capture the essence of this mountainous northern Italian region. Founded in 1907, the estate remains family-run and is particularly celebrated for its single-vineyard Pinot Noir and Gewürztraminer. The latter is a specialty of the area, as the variety originates from Tramin, a village just a few kilometres from the Hofstätter estate. Their Joseph Gewürztraminer is a classic expression of the grape, showcasing its aromatic intensity, richness, and balance.
The grapes for this wine are sourced from hillside vineyards around Tramin, growing in a mix of calcareous, clay, and gravel soils. The cool alpine climate and warm daytime temperatures encourage slow ripening, preserving the grape’s vibrant aromatics while maintaining freshness. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel to retain purity, followed by a short period of ageing on fine lees to enhance texture and depth.
Appearance: Deep golden yellow with amber reflections, showing clear signs of maturity. The wine has a rich, viscous texture, forming slow-moving legs when swirled in the glass. A slight copper hue at the rim hints at its age and evolution.
Aroma: Intensely perfumed, with exotic notes of lychee, ripe apricot, and candied citrus peel. Floral aromas of rose petals and orange blossom are prominent, alongside hints of honey, nutmeg, saffron, and a delicate smokiness that has developed with age. A touch of marzipan and waxy citrus adds further depth and intrigue.
Taste: Full-bodied and opulent, with layers of tropical fruit, honeyed citrus, and a touch of dried mango. The palate is broad and oily, yet balanced by a fine thread of acidity that keeps the wine from feeling heavy. Subtle spice notes of clove, ginger, and white pepper add complexity, while the maturity of the wine brings out a slightly waxy texture and hints of caramelised fruit and roasted nuts.
Finish: Long and lingering, with an elegant interplay of exotic fruit, floral notes, and a soft, warming spice. A faint minerality emerges on the finish, adding depth and structure. The aftertaste carries a gentle bitterness reminiscent of orange peel and almond, leaving a refined and sophisticated impression.
Food Pairing:
Spicy Thai coconut curry, where the wine’s floral intensity and touch of sweetness complement the heat and richness of the dish.
Foie gras with a spiced fruit chutney, as the wine’s aromatic complexity and lush texture match the richness of the foie gras while enhancing the sweet and savoury contrast
